I just received a pair and I am very impressed.  I only have my Nikon Monarch ATB 8X42 to compare to, but I have looked thru other optics (Zeiss Conquest, Swaro SLC, Leupold Cascade) and am very happy with these binoculars.  While I will not go so far to say they are better than the SLC's but they give a close race.  I believe they are better than the Monarchs, the Conquests, and the Leupold, no contest.

Couple of things to note:
Promaster is 26 oz...so bino harness is a necessity
Field of view is 393ft which is very nice
Have to get used to the split optics handle (like SLC), but like it the more I deal with it

Overall for that price......dont believe it can be beat...however, only time will tell about durability and warranty service, if needed.

I think that last issue you mentioned is really the only thing stopping some folks from purchasing them. If a year or two passes and these bins are still around then I think that will change alot of folks minds on them.

You really do have to watch the comments on how good the image is.  Once someone takes the time to look through one of them, the image quality you see will pretty much sell itself.  What applies to Promaster ELX ED image applies to the ZED ED Frank reviewed too.

I have had my Promasters side by side to Zeiss FL, Leica Ultravid HD, Swarovsli EL, Steiner Peregrine XP, Miknox HG, Meopta Meostar, Leupold Gold Ring and Vortex Razor.  The image quality falls in the middle of that group.  I guess that's pretty good company for a $400 binocular.  Most people would have a pretty hard time seperating those out anyway.
