OK, so this isn't a bad problem, just need some opinions..

I have a Kimber 8400 Classic In .338 Win Mag..

I have two VXIII scopes. One is the Boone and Crocket reticle with an AO and is 4.5-14x40 and the other is a standard duplex reticle that is 3.5-10x40..

Which one is better suited in your opinions for a .338? I bougth the 4.5-14 for a 300 win mag but ended up not getting the gun so I'm curious if it's well suited for the 338...

Using Talley bases and rings.

What will be your main use for the .338?

Probably mid to long range shooting and hunting out west. AZ Elk to Canada  Grizzly..

It's not going to Africa or anything, I know a few that have used low power scopes for their

338's and larger..

But these are the two I have to choose from

Thanks

Most people want a .338 as a .375 light or less powder for less recoil. The 3.5x10 should be plenty.  2x7 and 2.5x8 are common for the .338

Silver's 3.5x10 recommendation is a good one.  Don't lose sleep over the 2.5x8.  I used a Vari-X III 2.5x8 on my .338, but found it really didn't add as much to the field of view as I would like.  I replaced it with a Burris FFII 3x9, which was brighter and seemed to have pretty much  the same field of view as the 2.5x8 in a side-by-side comparison.  The .338 works fine on big bears.  Good hunting!

Ya I went with the 3.5-10, I think it was a good choice..

I'll have to find a flatter shooting gun for the 4.5-14..

big bore maybe 300 win mag

small bore maybe 22-250

who knows with me..

Thanks though.

I have had several variations of this caliber over the past dozen years or so and I've found staying in the 2.5-10 or the 3.5-10 range a good choice.  Especially if you are going into the bushes after any of the large hairy stuff!  Then when you get out in the open, you have enough left over to crank it up and get it on!
