I mounted a Nikon Pro Staff 3-9x40 on my Remington 7600 30-06, and it shoots 6 ft short under 50 yards. But at 100+ it will but all rounds in a 3 in diameter bull's eye. What could be wrong?

Sounds too strange without a fair bit more information. What do you mean 6 ft short? How high is the scope mounted? at what ranges does it hit the bull? at what ranges is it hitting high, or low? We need to analyze what the trajectory is to be able to determine the main culprit.

It skips off the ground in front of the target 3-5 ft. I have 1 in high mounts on it. From 70-130 yards it hits bull. It only hits low at all distances closer than 50 that I know of. It’s the weirdest thing I have ever had happen when mounting a scope, but it is the first time I have ever used high mounts.

Assume nothing.Make sure the scope screws are all tight.Try to zero at50 yds, then to 100.Zero the old way by taking out the bolt & looking down the barrel at the target, without moving the riffle, replace the bolt & zero the turrets. This should get you fairly close, but do start closer than the 100 yrd mark.Hope this helps.

Are the front and rear bases and rings matched? Sounds like the front mount is higher then the rear??
Something very wrong here.

I am barrowing a laser bore sighter from a friend next weekend to help see what's going on and I guess if that doesn't work I will go buy a new set of mounts and see what happens. Thanks for everyone's help.

How high off the ground is the target you are shooting at?
If you are close to Loganville Ga. shoot me a PM. I will be happy to look the gun over and render any help I can.

I dunno how that is possible unless the optics were feet about the bore

1.5" is usually the sight height of a normal scope mount
2.5 is unusually high but even at 3.0" sight height and
zeroed at 100 yds your bullet would only be 1.1" low at 50 yds
that gives you guys an idea of what your up against......
I'd say the problem is your shooting over an arc in the
land so what's happening is the dirt gets in the way of the
bullet.....................otherwize NASA would be interested
in this rifle and bullet, and might even pay millions of $$$
for it.........matter of fact I would like to be the middle
man here, If your rifle shoots 2 or 3 foot low at fifty yds
and hits the bullseye at 100yds and your scope mount
is not mounted 6 feet over the barrel I'd give 1/2 a mill for it.....
on a serious note I'd look at the first option it has to be the
culprit.................

Agree, what we have here is an "optical Illusion" never seen a flat range and when one sits down at a bench very easy to hit a little dirt depending on distance.
