I received a new Marlin 336 today, and it had a Tasco scope on it, with adjustable power 3-9 (I can see this on the magnification ring).  No other identifying wording I can see.  I searched the database several times and could not find any info, so I apologize if this info is somewhere (will appreciate help finding any threads).  Here is problem.  When I first turned the pewer dial (with scope on rifle at range), the magnification did indeed increase as I moved from 3 to 9 (the target got larger), though the ovrall focus was off.  I took off the scope to use the irons sites.  When I got home, and set up the focus for the scope, I could not get the magnification working.  Nothing changes as I move the magnification ring throught the powers.  Did I "break" the magnification somehow?  Did I turn it off?  I tried searching also on general internet (which I have done many times sucessfully on many other items/issues) but I couldn't find anything to help.  I hope I am simply making some simple newbie mistake.  Any suggestions to get this working, if possible? Thank you!!

Sounds like the scope is bad. Time for a new one I guess. The focus should remain throughout all magnification as long as you aren't looking at something super close. Adjusting the focus should also not make the magnification quit working.

IMO this would be a heck of a scope on a Marlin 336. These are a closeout special right now and I think just about everybody here has one in one form or another on everything from a 22LR to Dangerous Game calibers. I think your Tasco is done for....

We measure it with a micrometer, mark it with a crayon, and cut it with a chainsaw.

I have thought about this one for a while and tried to picture what may cause the scope to not respond to the power ring brought on by adjusting the focus adjustment. I really can't unless for some reason you cranked the eye piece all of the way out/in and it somehow caused the magnification ring to disengage ( not likely). Anyway I'm afraid you might be cooked just as some have said here in which case it's time to go shopping. There are a number of scopes better than what you have avaliable for pretty reasonable costs. If you can share a budget then you will get some good suggestions as to what is actually avaliable.Sorry I can't do better for you.

thank you for the replies, and the scope suggestion.  It does look pretty.  I think I will have to pass on that right now, though ($$$ - and see below).

Just in case anyone searches in the future on this problem, I figured it out, and it was indeed my own (newbie) fault.  I had loosened the magnification ring screw too much (beats me why I loosened it at all) so that it no longer was in the retaining hole, so the outer ring just turned without the inner ring turning (so no magnification change).  When I then positoned the ring so I could screw the retaining screw into the hole, the magnification adjustment worked just fine.  Not a super duper scope by any means (was on the rfile when I bought it), but now I can see how it works and what kind of groups it can give me.

thanks again to you who replied.  I appreciate your help!

In the long run you probably will want to go to better glass.  Good Luck.
