Am looking to buy an AR15 type rifle.  Not sure what I would use it for, probably just shooting cans in the desert.  My question is that it will probably take me a year to save up for one.  Do I have to worry about an assault rifle ban?  Should I hurry up and buy one in case Hillary gets into office, or should I not worry about that and take my time.   Thanks

the way it sounds right now you wont likely buy a brand new one right away because of the high demand, i could be wrong but maybe gunbroker has a new one or two.

one way around the problem, is to just buy a lower, sort of insurance, that way you want be in alot of dollars until you see which way the wind is blowing.  lowers, however, are a little more scarce than complete guns. there will never be a shortage of uppers, and associated parts as long as there is money in it. In fact most of the guys that I know -who have seen the gun scare a couple of times, buy 2-3 lowers, relatively cheap, and you will always be able to sell. (have one friend who hopes they ban ar's he has got a "bunch" and wants to make a bunch of bucks).

As Dale said- buy a lower , or at least a stripped lower for around $120 and then buy the parts to assemble one as you go along. If you have never assembled an Ar before, just join the forum at AR15.com and read along. They are the easiest guns to put together, and by doing this, you can become very familiar with the operating system. It is also cheaper to build your own.Thunbs%20Up

What is a lower, and where would I find one?

I was looking at some at sportsmans wearhouse.  I liked the looks of the shorter version.  I think the kid said it was an m4.  I also liked the looks of the collapsible stock.  That does sound like fun to build one.  Buys parts as I get the money.

Check out Rainier Arms. You can buy the lower and they will install as many or as few parts as you wish.
Good people!! Ask for John.

I have bought four lowers from these guys.  They seem to always have everything in stock.  All there parts are made by the same machine company that makes Bushmasters parts.  Good stuff, I have built several of them and they everything works great.
They sell STAG lowers, I really like the STAG stuff as well.

some part of every firearm must be registered under the NFA, the lower frame on ars is that part... since no other part needs registration or control there will never be a shortage.

one of the really sweet parts about ar and 1911 -- regulation and control exists only in someones imagination (spelled politician)

I have read a lot of good things over on AR15 about DPMS lowers.  They aren't that pricey either.  Before I buy does anyone have any experience with them?

this is a dpms lower and an rra upper in 458 socom. dpms is part of the bushmaster, remingtion marlin group now, and their entire line of guns are good. one thing to remember is that unllike most hunting rifles, most companys have built at least there lowers if not uppers to mil-spec and as such are very uniform by comparison, and as a result most companys build a good product. one nice thing about building your own you can choose to go the target way or small light carbine, and the dollar amt you want to put into it.

Thanks dale for the info.  I got an e-mail from John at Ranier.  He said a good lower for me to get would be the stag.  I imagine that they are all pretty similar, and it wouldn't matter one way or the other.  They are both the same price.

I agree with getting the lower situation in check before worrying about what "flavor" you are hungry for. Depending on what you are looking for, blasting, accuracy, hunting, big bore, etc....it would be best to look around. I found the 6.5 Grendel to fit my needs. I have the accuracy, now I'm looking for the power aka the .50 Beowulf.

Check these out.  WSSM uppers, pretty sweet.  I have talked to the guy a couple times and he says they are completely reliable and very accurate.

After owning Colt rifles for the last 25 years, I sold them and began building my own AR. My latest is an M 4 with a DPMS lower. The upper is a Stag. Everything functions flawlessly. I will have no problem with buying another DPMS lower in the future. Or a complete rifle for that matter.
Have Fun!!
