Hey all,
This is my first post here. I've been reading this forum a lot and have a couple of questions:
1.) I'm getting a Remington 700SPS Tactical and am looking for a good target scope for 100 - 300 yard shooting. My budget would be in the $300 range. Any suggestions?

2.) Seeing as the gun's going to be strictly for target shooting, would there be a significant difference in sight picture between a 40mm and 50mm objective lens?

Any input would be greatly appreciated..

I am in the process of setting up a similiar rig. I have settled on a 8,5-25x50 Leupold with sideAO.
I would suggest you go for something with at least a 20x power. I would also suggest that to keep cost down you rather go for something without a AO (adjustable Objective).
Firstly rather buy good glass then high end magnification. Secondly rather forego AO for better glass. On longer distances AO is less of a requirement.
The 40mm vs 50mm can only be answered by your shooting conditions. If you live shoot in a bright sunny area then the 40mm will be the same as a 50mm. As shadows lengthen or it becomes overcast, then a 50mm will definately give you a better picture.
An article I read stated, before anything else comes good glass. In other words a 40mm 3,5-10 Schmidt and Bender will be better and clearer then a 3-50x68 made in some dodgy chinees factory.
Let that principle guide you.

Welcome to The OT.

Your shooting scenario mirrors my own and for your price range, I suggest the 10x, rear focus Super Sniper.

Thanks for the input guys. I was looking at the SS scopes on that website. Any idea how good the Swifts are? Thanks for clearing up the 40 / 50mm question. Either of you guys know of a good review site for scopes?

Good honest scope reviews are hard to find. Most reviews will say the usual nice stuff, irrespective of which scope they are reviewing.
This site itself has some good benchmarking etc.
If you are going to shoot at 100yds and further a fixed power of 10x will work for you and bring the cost down.
I shoot from 25yds out to 300. At the 25 the 8,5x becomes a problem. At 50yds I can live with it. Anything further and I can crank up the power. From 100yds on I can go to 25x.

Well, I've narrowed it down to the SS20X42. 1 question though: At 100yards, will 20X compared to 10X be that much of a difference in the actual picture (field of view, etc.)?

10X at 100 yards is a 13 foot FOV

20X at 100 yards is a 6.2 foot FOV

Yes it does make a difference. If you are on 20X the chances are good that you end up shooting on the wrong target due to poor FOV. Our targets are on one level, and the target numbers one level above. On 20X you cannot get target and number into same sight picture. So you have to be darn sure you are alighning up to the correct target.

Like everything specially in optics, you have to play the trade off game. If you are purely target shooting with lots of time to aquire your target, or the target is clearly numberedor marked, a 20X will be great. Like everything in life you get used to the narrow FOV and soon you do not even notice it. You learn to compensate by other means, eg opening both eyes briefly etc.

I'd personally go with a 10x or 16x SS at the most. I shoot at the ranges you metioned frequently with a 10x SS with no problems.
Less mirage issues and better FOV with the 10x.

Interesting point about the mirage effect. Do any of you know the maximum distance the 10X will go before mirage becomes a factor? I'd be shooting at 100 yards most of the times, but we have a 200 yard range here in CT as well.

Higher magnification scopes have more mirage issues than the lower power units.

10x seems (to me) to be a good enough magnification to see your target, but a low enough magnification as to not be as affected AS MUCH as a higher powered scope.
If you want to go with a SS to shoot the distances you mentioned, I'd adamantly recommend the 10x.
Some guys regularly shoot a 10x out past 1000 yards.

I've shot 1000 yards in a F-class with a 2-7x variable set near the top end. It worked quite well, within other limitations of my equipment at the time. I really wouldn't have WANTED much more magnification with the mirage I had to deal with that day.
I was holding the center of the aiming black on the big Palma targets though, so if you are aiming at a real tiny target, you may need a little more power if the conditions allow it.
Also keep in mind that Benchrest Competitors often shoot at 100 or 200 yards at a tiny target with 30X or 40X fixed powers, while Palma shooters run 1000 yards with Iron sights!
Required magnification is not solely a function of distance alone.
Depending on the target, I think a 10x would suit you quite well.

Everybody, thanks a lot for your input. I did settle on the SS10X42. Ordered from SWFA. Once it's in and mounted, then the fun begins....Big%20Grin

I have found you don't need a lot of magnification 100yds, and to much of a good thing aint good. The other day I was shooting some test loads at 100yds. on a snow covered range on a sunny mourning. I was using a Leopold 6.5-20x50 on a 300WM set at 6,5x; as the sun got higher in the sky the mirage got so bad so quick I had to stop. I don't know if a higher power would have made a difference on the mirage, but I know that at that distance my groups open up on higher powers, and tight groups were the goal. I'd stick to 10x.Bucky

I'm no x-pert, but thats my story and I'm sticken to it.
