First thing i want to know is what power scope do you need for seeing deer well out at 500 yards. My 3-9-40 just doesn't see well out past 250. I can make out a buck or doe with it but I like to see more detail than that. So would a 4-14 be enough or would i need somthing that goes into the 20x range?

I tend to like the Bushnell 4200  4-16x40 however I am usually shooting 200 to 300 yds so if you really want to evaluate the rack at 500 you will need a solid rest and I would suggest this:

4.5x14 conquest or 4x16 bushnell elite will both work pretty well for long range deer hunting.

Remember though, as your magnification goes up, your fov and brightness goes down.  So at these magnifications, I would stick with a large objective and either a mildot model for the distance you will be shooting or one with repeatable elevation and windage adjustments, depending on which type of shooting you prefer at such a distance.  Even with a 300 Wby. mag., at that distance, you are looking at a hold over of about 20 inches.  So, that is another way to do it, as the size of a deer's chest from top to bottom is about 18 inches, or 5 mildots at 100 yards.
