I have a question regarding IOR scopes. I understand that they use the same glass as Zeiss, so why are they not as popular? From what I can see, they have alot more bells and whistles then Zeiss for a cheaper price, and considering that everyone seems to be quite happy with zeiss then why dont people buy IOR?

My delemma is that IOR appeals to me, but it seems that it isnt very polular among the shooting community....am I missing something?

Any feedback would be appreciated

They are usually quite heavy and the service stateside isn't as well established. Eye relief can be a bit tight on some models also.

So are the IOR scopes as good as Zeiss are far as optics, other than being heavier and eye relief?

I have 3 IOR scopes and can say from experience they are fantastic.  Completely rugged and will take any abuse you can give them.  I have dropped and drug my AR many times and the IOR scope always stays with a perfect zero.

Ziess and IOR both use Schott Glasswerk of Germany in their scopes.  IOR uses Ziess coatings on their glass.  So in reality you are getting the exact same glass for less money.

The down side to a Ziess if you are using it as a tactical scope is all Ziess tactical scopes only have 50 MOA of elevation, which is not enough to reach 1000 yards with a .308.  If long range is not your use then that is not a concern.

IOR has a huge following with the precision rifle crowd.  They are amazing optics and 100% repeatable.

I have looked through both and a Ziess has nothing on an IOR.  You won't be disappointed with an IOR.

Also if you really want great optics for less money check out Meopta, they also use Schott Glasswerk glass.  I have several of those and they are as clear and bright as an IOR

I second the IOR, I had one and will be getting another, I loved it. GREAT SCOPE, It's heavy because it is built like a TANK.

Ok, what "Zeiss" are we talking about here??
The VM/V??

Welcome to The OT, supertool.

Doesn't IOR use the older T3 coatings, where the top shelf Zeiss uses T* coatings??

Zeiss VM/V's, IMHO, out perform the IOR's of yesteryear. Haven't seen the new IOR models so.....shrug.

MC-7...Thanks, cyborg. I stand corrected.
As I stated earlier, I've been out of the IOR loop for a few years.

I believe this to be the newer coatings. Mine was three years old, and this coating, I believe was just introduced in 2007.

I was at the range one day and a guy had I believe a Victory Divarhi. (spelling).  it was a 3-12 with a huge freaking bell on it, a good cheek weld was not going to happen on that gun LOL.  But anyway, he claimed he spent $1600 on it.  I compared it to my IOR 3-18x-42 and I personally could not see any difference in image quality.  I am certainly not dogging Ziess as that is really impossible to do as they are fantastic.  But he spent quite a bit more for a hunting scope as I did on a nice precision scope.  I can't say for sure on what coatings they are using now.  My new 6-24x-50 I believe has newer coatings than my 3-18x.  I will check tonight on the docs and let you know.  Basically all I am getting at is for the money and quality I prefer the IOR.

IOR's website has not been updated for several years, so that is not the best place to get current accurate info.

From what I have heard IOR did have some problems a few years back.  But they have been corrected and they are now making great stuff.  They have a huge following over on snipersparadise.com.  Many of the really great shooters and school instructors are really liking them.  You should check them out again, I bet you would be suprised.

I found this here in the OT.

To the best of my knowledge T3 coatings had nothing to do with Carl Zeiss.  When IOR was behind the iron curtain, they had a fairly loose association with the East German Zeiss Jena (not affiliated with West German Carl Zeiss).  East German Zeiss Jena is now known as Docter Optics.  Whether Zeiss Jena had anything to do with T3 coatings is not clear.  However, I am quite certain that MC-7 coatings have nothing to do with Zeiss of any sort.

This is a misconception I see fairly frequently.  I suspect SWFA has just not gotten around to correcting it.

Vern "Flea" Harrison still doing his thing with the IOR's over at Sniper's Paradise? Harry (Specopscout) likes them too, if I remember correctly.

Like pyro said and I eluded to, I had a little problem with an IOR 2.5-10x Tactical....Long story, but like you say and so I've heard, Val and IOR seemed to have gotten better the past few years. We have some loyal IOR dudes on this site as well.

I'm sorry you had a problem with your IOR Ct. You referring to me in the above? I can't help myself, I do love them IOR's. I wish I was rich I'd have a bunch of them. Rifles to put them on too.

I will agree with that, Val has been a real PITA for me as I have been trying to get a new rubber ring for my eye piece for 3 months and still do not have one.  He gets mad at me when I call about it now, I don't know if I will ever actually get one.

I'll tell ya what Bro. When I get my new one, we'll do a swap thing, that way I can play with a Nikon, and you can play with an IOR.

Okay the newest coating after the MC-7 is called:  This is in the documentation that came with my scope.   But it is a special request coating and MC-7 is used on most of them.

"IOR Bucuresti LPC Coating technology is the latest and most advanced in the industry. .  It offers 20 layers of coating per surface to air lens.  Bringing light transmission closer to 100% than any other manufacturer."

I've owned two IOR scopes (the 6x24 50mm in both 30mm & 35mm tube) and two Zeiss VM/V (Diavari/Victory model) models.  To MY EYES both Zeiss scopes had better color & "brightness" than either IOR models.  Resolution wise, it was a tie between the two.
When you consider the price difference, the IOR line is a very good value and offers outstanding performance.  I've dealt with IOR customer service (ie--Val and Scott) and feel that they treated me very well & professionally.  Communication was timely and my issues were resolved without a rise to my blood pressure.  Maybe I got lucky as I have heard of others feeling that IOR's customer service was lacking a few years ago.  I think the problem has since been remedied...

What problems did you have with your scope(s) Ceylonc and how were they resolved?
