hey guys, ive narrowed down my choice to these two scopes and the leo is $199.95 vs the zeiss being $349.95 and I don't really know the big difference as to why the zeiss is significantly more expensive. If anyone can offer their thoughts on each and whats the better buy. Thanks for all yalls help.

varixII or vxII?? either way it doesnt matter the zeiss is better optically than either of those, you will notice better quality glass better low light performance and a cleaner picture in general

Oooops! Didn't see pyro's post.......
Agreed, the VX 2 or the Vari-X 2 won't out perform the Conquest.
The Leupold VX 3 is a better comparision in that regard.

Welcome to the forum!!!..............The VX2 or the Zeiss! Go Zeiss Conquest assuming you wish to spend the money!!.........OR! Consider the 3x9 Elite 4200 for $260 instead....Certainly, a better scope optically than the VX2 and even the VX3 and comes to within a fraction in the brightness category to the Zeiss while remaining just as clear and resolute!!!..........You look through a 4200 and a Zeiss Conquest and if your eyes can justify the extra $90 or $100 bucks, then buy the Zeiss!!

Conquest is a real good choice, use quite a few and never had a complaint. The reticle and the glass will satisfy.

thanks guys i appreciate it, just trying to learn a little more. I have been looking at the 4200 as well as the 3200(what is the main dif b/t the two for the money?) Do yall think the 4200 vs the conquest is worth the $100 dif?

The 4200 is a lot better than the 3200 I've had and used both. Yes I think the $100 diff between the 4200 and conquest is worth the money due to the different occular focus, the etched reticle, the slightly heavier reticle for low light, resistance to flare out,and the slightly better brightness. Does this apply to everyone else?....maybe not, it just makes that much difference to me. Get both in hand and check em out.

Tough choice between the two ..Focus has some good points, but on the other hand the 4200's rainguard really works, and optically they're very close ... tough choice--

dunagan15, i just went through this same process as you are doing. I didn't want to go over the $400 mark so I ruled out the kahles, swars, etc. I can say this, the leupold's did not compare to the Zeiss or 4200's.

I have had the 3-9 Monarch and the 3-9 4200 side by side the last few weeks. The optical difference between the two is not much. The Rainguard I'll have to take a shower with to test. I won't be hunting in the rain up here for a while.
I'm trying to prod my brother into posting his opinion of his 3-9 4200 because he also has the 3-9 Conquest on his night time Volquartsen .22 mag.
BTW, my VarX-III's are supposed to be the optical equivalent of the newer VX-II's. They are very good scopes but the 4200 and Monarch are a little better. Like CT said, the VX-III would be a better comparo.

i also have a monarch and a 4200 but i havent got the 4200 mounted yet to confirm if its better at last light than the monarch but from what other members have told me the 4200 is a little better in last light than the monarch is. rainguard is suppose to be awesome stuff, although ive never had any issue with the monarch in the rain or snow. but its suppose to really help.

i have been a vol fireman since 1996, when i was in highschool we had a junior firemen program, that my dad (the chief) had started, and as long as we kept our grades up we could leave school for fires and such. i really liked it, and usually spend over 1000hrs a year between calls meetings training and other issues and i enjoy it most of the time, have a hard time with infants and small children but everybody does. we get paid $5 per call and $5 per meeting so its not for the money for sure!

Wow, this thread has been flying today.
My 3-9 Monarch is the simple plex because I am a simple man .
I like them both about the same. The reticles are very similar. Regarding brightness and clarity, I could pick up evergreen branches @ 300 yards 1/2 hour past sunset equally well with each. Contrast and resolution I would call a draw.
The Rainguard might be an abvantage and the 3-9 Monarch is no longer made. This might be a deciding factor.
They both are matte and dimensioned nicely. They won't over power or detract from the looks of a short action rifle.

o ya, well in an earlier post i posted that i bought a new remington 700 but that was actullay a gun my friend got and wanted some opinions so i posted for him. Im actually looking at the remington 700 right now and know I either want a 270 or 30.06(havent looked into this too much about the big differences b/t the two), ive also been looking at the browning a-bolt as well but havent made any decisions yet.
|
Posted By: pyro6999
Date Posted: December/26/2007 at 07:47
depending on which remington you buy, the browning may cost more browning's are nice with the clip they have, i have two of them myself both are very accurate, remingtons are very nice too. i like the 30-06 myself out of the two you listed, i dont know if you reload or not, but the 30-06 will have a lot more weights of bullets to choose from than the .270 will. but the .270 isnt a bad choice either, at least you know with either one of those you wont ever be anywhere without ammo being available

i agree, they both are good, but I just got done talking with the owner of a gun store and with the type of hunting im doing i believe a 300 might be the best cliber for me, even though its a little much for 50-75 yards it will still do the job. dead is dead right? So with that in mind ive now began to look at Tikka 300 win mag. What do you guys think?
|
Posted By: pyro6999
Date Posted: December/28/2007 at 14:13
awesome caliber tikkas are hot right now, if you think its in your price range buy it. at 50-75yds with the 300winmag you will just kill what ever you shoot "extra" dead no biggy, i hate feeking undergunned like elmer use to say never go in the field undergunned course he called the 300 a hell of a varmint rifle. remingtons are also very nice

Date Posted: December/28/2007 at 14:56
you said the tikka was lighter than the rem, and all i meant by that was that when you start talking about magnum calibers sometimes the weight is nice to help soften the recoil. i couldnt find any metal mags, doesnt mean they do or do not exsist though

|
Posted By: pyro6999

your talking about a totally different animal in a 300winmag my friend your looking at a 180gr bullet flying 3000fps out of a 7lb rifle will be different than anything you will experience with the .270 or 30-06, now its not going to be terrible just may surprise you when you touch the first shell off

Dunagan15,
A 300 Win Mag has got approx 30 ft-lbs of felt recoil, while a 30/06 has got about 22 ft-lbs in an average weight rifle ( or something like that). The 300 has about HALF AGAIN the kick. If your length of pull is correct and if you have a straight comb stock, it ain't bad at all...but more weight is better I think! I used to have a restocked Model 70 in 300 Win and the rifle itself was a little heavy at 8 lbs. But it shot like an 06!! I didn't mind the extra weight. (But it was NOT a Mountain Rifle by any means.) --Ed

regarding a "straight comb stock".......... does that mean comparing a 700 BDL to a CDL in the same caliber, the CDL will have less felt recoil? If this is true, why is that?
------------- take em!
|
Posted By: pyro6999

i can tell you that the cdl in the same cal as a bdl only weighs 1/8# more so its not a weight issue there.

A stock with a straight comb will deliver the recoil straight backward rather than jump up and smack you in the cheek. I never really did care for monte carlo stocks very much but with ordinary "deer rifle" calibers the stock is not much of an issue. However, when you start getting into magnums, I want a stock that is built correctly so the rifle doesn't jump up and beat the hell out of me when it goes off.
If you want to know what I'm talking about go borrow some friend's Monte Carlo magnum and fire a few rounds. That is why most of the custom gunmakers use classic style stocks.

Yeah monte carlos have a bit of "jump" to them while straight stocks in line with the bore push back in a straighter line. If you're having a custom stock built a little offset really softens recoil also.
