I have found a new pair of Minolta 8x42 Activa D binoculars in a local camera store. They are willing to part with them for $250. I have found another pair online for $220, plus shipping. Are these binoculars a good value at this price? I am a little concerned about the warranty support from Minolta, so I think that I might be better off getting Nikon Monarchs for just a little more money.

I would use the binoculars for bird watching and when I am hiking.

Any input that would help me make an informed decision would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Rick

I'd be more than a little concerned about the warranty support from Minolta, since they have been out of business.

While you are looking at Nikon products take a look at the Nikon Action Extreme ATB 8x40mm porro prism binocular and compare it to the Monarch.

Field Of View on the Monarch is a narrow 330' compared to the AE ATB which is 430'.

Thanks for the info. I will look at the Nikon Action Extremes as well.

Hi,
I have both of the Nikon Action EX 7X35 and the Realtree HD 10X42 Monarch, Both of them are great binocular.... The Monarch is a better binocular, but I love both of them. I use the EX for close range becaue of the lower magnification you get wider field of view and the Monarch have more power for longer range or even in close range you get better and more detail on field of view. Either one of them is good, it's depend on how would you like to use your binocular.

I ended up with a pair of the Pentax DCF SP in 8x42. They seem pretty good. The lack of a support for the Minolta's kind of made me nervous. I think I am going to order a pair of the Vortex Razors in 10x42 for the big open areas here.

Thanks for your help.

Rick
