I have been debating between getting a Leupold Mark 4 2.5-10x40 scope or a 10x40 mark 4 for my remington 700 LTR.  Does anyone know why the fixed power mark 4's are 2-300 dollars more than the variables?  It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.  Which is the best way to go?

One of the reasons is, the straight power models have a lot more MOA adjustment vs. the variables. (in elevation)

The fixed power models are nice scopes I traded my fixed 10x M3 in on this:

The First Focal Plane scope in a variable with M1 knobs is far better for my needs, but the 10x M3 is idiot proof and you can not get lost in the dial under stress, down side is that
1 moa per click really doesnt allow you to fine tune the correction enough at really long distance. Up close and personal 10x is too much but fixed power scopes are less moving parts and therefore much tougher.  Do yourself a favor and protect the front objective with a screw on Alumina filter as well as flip open lens caps or an ARD.  I also have a Mk4 8.5-25x50 illuminated (not the new FFP) nice scope but I would rather have something lower on the low power end --  when they come out with the 6.5-20x50 FFP I will undoubtedly want one of those also.  The 4.5-14 is actually my favorite power range but these are all nice scopes and irregardless of how the other optics guys here trash Leupold I can tell you that these are the pick of the Military and Police snipers who are betting their lives on their equipment working

hard time getting the pict and text to appear together, but the 10 has a thicker tube and is heavier duty, weighs the same as a 3.2x10 which is unusual for a fixed.
the 4.5x14 is more versatile.

I just like the fact that the hold over points remain the same at all power settings with a FFP rather than only being useful at the highest power like most balistic reticles.  It just makes it really fast to engage targets at distances that vary from 100 to 600 yds. Nice stick Dale I really like the 4.5-14 and it was a hard choice to go FFP vs the added power.
