Okay, just bought a Savage 22-250 low profile varminter.  Bought it to do some prairie dog hunting in the spring.  Might also try and shoot a coyote sometime...  At the approx. $400-450 price point, it seems that the consensus is the 4200 Elite is a better value than the Leupold VXII.

Now, what 4200 should I get?  To be honest, I'm new to this and pretty clueless, but have lots of questions!

4-16 or 6-24 power?  Will I even be able to hold steady enough off a bench or bipod to use the powers above 16?  If not, the advantage of it going down to 4 on the low end would be a benefit.

40 vs 50 mm?  Does it add value worth the added price?

Types of Reticle?  Is there a preferred one for prairie dogs and coyotes at 200-350 yards?

Thanks in advance for your input.  It's much appreciated.

i use my 20x nikon off a bipod at prairie dog size targets no problem. more than that probably limits field of view too much. i also shoot under spotlight at night so mirage isn't a problem for me.however, during a warm day over say 14x things start getting a bit hazy.
40mm for day time fine. 50mm no advantage unless at night/dusk/dawn and you want all the light gathering capacity you can get.
therefore in my humble opinion the 4200 6-24-40 would give you the best all round versatility.
on a side note though, my nikon monarch 5-20-44 with nikoplex reticle fits the bill well unless of course you want a different reticle. can be had for $410.

You may want to look at the Nikon Monarch 4-16   with the mil-dot if you are going to be doing any distance shooting at the prairie dogs, I don't believe the Bushnell 4200 has that feature.

Thanks Duce.  Is that in a different price category than the 4200, or in the same range?

i strongly suggest staying away from the 6x if you hunt coyotes by your self at all, unless you carry a shotgun with you as well 4x will allow you to shoot the ones that "appear" out of the blue.

I've had very good experience with the 4x16x40 4200 elite on a 22-250 dedicated varmint rifle. I like being able to go down to 4X for closer shots as pyro said. The rainguard is nice on wet days and they come with a sunshade thats a nice extra when shooting in bright sunlight. Mine has tracked and held POI perfectly and the optics are among the best in price class. I like the std duplex as its thin and doesn't cover too much target at longer range. All in all I think you will like it. The 50mm objective would be a little better for low light or night shooting but needs to be mounted higher to clear the barrel. Its pictured on my savage in my avatar.
