i want a scope to shoot prairie dog size targets[~4" diameter preferrably less] out to 250m.
is it worth sacrificing power to get better glass if the price is roughly the same. say a 10x scope with excellent glass vs a 20x scope with good glass?

You remember those $30 kid's telescopes they used to sell at Walmart for star-gazing? The ones that had about a 100 x magnification? No matter what you looked at, you couldn't tell what it was, but it sure looked BIG? Same principle.

ok, let me be more specific. how about a 20x fullfield vs a 10x ior?

A decent compromise is an acceptable thing, the 20x FFII would suit the application. then again at the 250m range so would the 10x IOR.

You can easily see a pd at 25 m with your naked eye right ?

So ultimately which would you prefer, better glass, or higher magnification. Your individual needs are more apt to make this determination, than anything that any one of us can.

The best advice is don't settle if you're not sure, save your money and get a scope that is not a compromise.

Plan on spending around  $600.00 and get a 4200 elite in the 6-24x range, the higher mags need better glass to take full advantage of the magnification. If you want more than 24x plan to spend around $800.00 or more, since you'll likely want to start shooting at longer ranges, you may want to seriously consider this. You may want to start looking at which reticle best suits your own needs as well.

Best wishes

i would ERR on the side of great glass.

BUT the FFII is not bad glass - the IOR is definitely better though.

the elite 4200 option is a good one too.

glass is more important than power in my opinion - but there are good compromises out there.

what is your budget?

budget is probably 500 tops and i really would like more mag than 12x. i will be shooting at night with a fairly bright spotlight and bipod at stationary targets! i shot tonight with my monarch 5-20-44 at 20x and it was a little dull. so ideally i need better glass, bigger objective or both??

this scope is great and if you are on that side of the 'pond' - it may be affordable.

i have one, and it's a really good scope for lowlight pinpoint shooting.

Rooshoter, since you are not entirely sure of the magnification that is sufficient for your needs, go with a variable.  Elite 4200 advise is probably a very good bang for the buck.  I have a 6-24x40AO Elite 4200 that I used on my varminter for a couple of years and it is a very nice scope.  I have since upgraded to much more expensive glass and the Elite 4200 is about to end up on Ebay, but in terms of ability to see, I had no complaints with it (I switched because I am rebarreling that gun to a different caliber and wanted a FFP scope).

I put a 4200 8-32x40 on my 6mm BR and it beats the pants off my Burris Signiture 8-32 I put on my custon .223 I had built. . I just bought another 4200 for the .308 I am having built. It seems to me that 8-32 in the USA does'nt cost that much more than the 24x. I don't know about availability over the pond, but my 8-32 arived 2 weeks ago for less than $450 inc delivery. Yes, new & in the factory box with the warranty card. Amaizing what you can find on line. But what is wrong with your Nikon Monarch? I own one I bought from SWFA via Ebay (3.5-10x50) and the glass is just great./Chaz

i haven't looked through many scopes but the resolution doesn't look brilliant to me. maybe i'm expecting too much. it does have a very bright image though.

has anyone compared the new monarchs to the old to comment on weather the quality of glass has changed.the old monarchs did have an adjustable obj. so i understand glass must have changed to some degree?

i mean how much detail should i be able to pick up with monarch type quality?

It all leaves me thinking Bushnell 4200 .  I have one of the 4-16x40 Bushnell 4200 scopes and I like it very well. The semi- tactical/target 30mm tube version  would be a great choice:
