Hi guys,

I just recently bought a Leupold Katmai 6x 32 mm and in reading the outside of the box they mention that the prisms are BK7 (instead of BK4).

I don't think that it is right, most be a mistake as the Katmai are expensive glasses.

Does anybody knows anything about it?

Best

According to John "from Scappoose"  Riutta, up until earlier this month the Leupold Product Line manager for binoculars and spotting scopes, the Katmai line was upgraded from BK7 to BAK4 in late 2006 - early 2007.  Sounds like you were sold old stock.   Here's his post on the matter:

Not necessarily old stock, just a box w/o a product update on the exterior.

I also purchased the Katmai, for my wife, in the 6x32mm and the box says BK7.

However, holding the binocular up to the light and looking at the exit pupils from approx. 12" shows them perfectly round, an indication that they are BAK-4.

I just received an e-mail from Leupold and they confirmed that the ones I bought are BAK-4, even though the box says otherwise.

Good deal:)  Glad to hear it was just a mislabeling issue.

If memory serves me right, the "round exit pupil" test is only applicable to porro prism binoculars.  With the roof prism design of the Katmai, the exit pupil will also be round with BK7 prisms.  You may have old stock Katmai.

Watchmaker,

The easiest thing to do is send Leupold an e-mail and indicate the serial number from the top of the focusing wheel.

They can verify by serial # if you have old BK7 or new BAK4.
