I have a great oppurtunity to purchase some Leupold Gold Ring Binos.
My questions are as follows:

What is the difference between the old Leupold Gold Ring 8x42 and the new HD Gold Rings.
Is the HD that much better? Is there other upgrades on the HD?
Do the old ones have index matched lens?
How do the HD compare to the big three?
What do you guys think of the Leupold Gold Rings in general?

I can get the old ones for around $450 and the new HD for around $850. Is there a $400 difference?

I know lots of questions....sorry

Thanks

Oh yea not worried about weight as I have a hand shake and the more weight helps steady the hand, hence the reason for 8 power as well

SItka,

There is a review of the Leupold GR at this link http://betterviewdesired.com - http://betterviewdesired.com .  I had the opportunity to use the GR a little some weeks before I read this review.  My opinion of them pretty much matches the reviewer's.  Aside from being sort of different looking and a little on the heavy side, they have superb blance and optics.  From what I've read the jury seems to be out on how much good ED glass does at 8-10X.  I have not had the chance to try an ED version, so I have no idea what the difference is much less what it might be worth.  As far as I could see, in direct comparison to some of the alphas, including Swarovski EL, Leica Trinovid, and Zeiss Victory (pre- FL) the Leupold non ED gave up nothing.  This might set off the alpha owners, but that is the way I see it.

The old ones have the matched index lens.  Really all this is is Leupold saying that every lens is designed a certain way, placed where the design puts it, and is coated in the way the design of the binocular calls for.  This is nothing different from the general process in any binocular. All manufacturers have their own proprietary coatings.  Leupold just invented "Index Matched Lens System" as a marketing lever.
