ok, has been a relatively slow night at work in the ER so i've done a bit of research tonight. i was initially looking for a sub $200 mildot scope to put on a swiss k31 which i plan to target shoot as well as hunt with. where i hunt, the field is about 1100 yards long and the main shooting house is in the middle so there COULD be shots up to about 500 yards. after a lot of reading, a decent $200 mildot scope does not seem to be a realistic option. therefore, i am now looking for a scope in the $400 or less range. would like to have mil dot or something similar. i've looked at nikon, zeiss, bushnell, and burris. i currently have a conquest on my tikka t3 and i love it. had a nikon monarch that i returned to the store because i didn't like it but things change and i may love the next nikon i look through. can't really give a clear reason why, but i like the optics on the zeiss better. any suggestions on what would be the most appropriate choice for my application. i'm looking for the most bang for my buck but since it is going on a $150 rifle i'd rather not go overboard on a scope so the cheaper (with decent optics) the better choice for me which means more money to buy more ammo! any and all help is greatly appreciated.

If you are going to take 500yd shots you will need a scope with at least 16X. If all your shots are at stationary animals then even going to 25X is not a bad option. Something like a 6-24x50 would work well for target and hunting out to those distances.

The normal 3-10 or 3-9 power will be at its limit for shots over 400yds.

As for brand, well this forum has many opinions. You cannot go wrong with a Zeis.

A 10x scope at 1000 yards is like having open sights at 100 yds. A 20x scope is like haveing open sights at 50 yds.

Strong reaction, my friend, only trying to express an opinion.

I used to shoot open sights at 300yds. At a push I will take it to 500 yds, no telescope needed. Then I discovered technology which made things a whole lot easier. Sure you can take 500yds with a 10X telescope. I shot a kudu last year ranged at 600yds. I put 3 bullets in him at that range, but all the shots were hope and spray.

All I am saying it is pushing the envelope. If you can see your target better you can hit it better.

If you plan to regulary take shots in excess of 400 yds, get a bigger then 10X or expect to take a lot of wounded animals. At a 1000 yds you will not take an animal with a 10X scope.

Of course, last time I checked, somewhere between 6-24 is a 10x setting, which you can use. On a 10x scope it stops at 10.

Not wanting to labour the above, some info from an article on the web:http://www.lazzeroni.com/ct_lrs.htm

To prepare yourself for long range shooting in the field you must begin with good equipment and that starts with the rifle. The long range hunting rifle must be able to put three shots into a 6 inch bullseye at 600 yards using 'premium hunting bullets' and put them there with enough energy left to effectively kill the animal with one shot.

The shooter must work with the rifle until he or she can consistently hit a 6 inch bullseye at 600 yards. One inch groups at 100 yards do not prove a thing.

Optics must be of the highest quality to withstand heavy recoil and have top power ranges between 12 and 24X. It is important to develop a technique that works for you.

I sight in my own personal rifles dead on at 300 yards using a Schmidt and Bender 4-16X50 or 3-12X50 scope with mil dot reticle. With the Lazzeroni muzzle velocities the fastest in the world in their respective calibers, this puts the path of the bullet no more than 2.8" above the point of aim out to 300 yards.

If the animal is at 400 yards, I center the animals chest between the horizontal crosshair and the first mil dot, while in the prone position using a good bipod. At 500 yards I place the first mil dot in the center of the kill zone. If the animal is farther than 500 yards or there is a significant crosswind, I don't shoot.

i posted a response but apparently it was deleted or it vanished. anyways, i've narrowed it down to the Super Sniper 10x42 and the Nikon 3.3-10x44 Monarch UCC. i'm leaning toward the monarch because i can use it at shorter distances and in low light compared to the super sniper. i'm guessing that the super sniper has better optics though. i'd have to sacrifice something with either scope. if you were in my shoes, would you go for the better 10x or the more useable monarch

Not so....The glass on the Monarch will beat the Super Sniper.

A couple of questions:

How do you plan to mount the scope onto your K31?

I have tried both St-Marie's Graphics mounts (and I use the clamp-on one), and they have some limitations that are likely to influence your choice of scopes.
