Hunting in low light conditions. Can I do any better than this?

You can do marginally better, but not easily.  Something along the lines of a Zeiss FL 8x56 or Leica Ultravid 8x50 or Swarovski SLCnew 8x56 would be a little better, but not a whole lot.

John,

Unless you have money to burn, Leica, Swarovski, and Zeiss will cost you two to three times as much, and in the majority of circumstances the Fujinon will not be easily outdone.

In most instances your eyes will not be able to discern very much difference at all.

Are the fujinon M22 I see for sale comparable to the FMTR SX?

not really - the FMTR are a step up.

the top end fuji's compare to the zeiss and swaro's i have held.

we did a lowlight test at the hunting club and the fuji's were SOLID.

and a 7x50 is a hell of a configuration for a bright, steady image.

i don't think you can beat that for the money.

i have military fuji's and they are even amazing, but the FMTR's are a whole different animal.

good luck.

Have found the 7x50 FMTR SX on sale for 399.99.
Have begun to second guess myself, am thinking about the 10x50.

They are very heavy and you should consider using a chest harness if you plan to carry them any distance. These were designed as a military
spec binocular, primarily for vehicle or marine use. That is not to disparage them; the optics are wonderful. I have a pair of 7x50 FMTRC-SX
(the compass-reticle version) now about eight years and I use them mostly for casual astronomy, boating and some shoreline observation.
They definitely are not a pair I would carry far into the field, though.

Don't second guess. The 10x50, with increased handshake and decreased exit pupil, will be less usefull in low light.

John,

  Appreciate your having shared the source of the $400 sale on these.  But after much consideration I've decided that 7x50 bins are an overkill for my about to be 60 year old eyes.  Plus I've scratched my itch for lower power bins with the Minox BD 6.5x32 IFs I recently picked up.  I'm sure you'll really enjoy yours.  The Fujinon Polaris bins have a great performance reputation.

I had some 8x40 Pentax porros stolen from my boat. I have some 10x40 dcf wp's and have looked thru some Pentax sp's. I have never looked thru one of the "Big THREE". I bought my brother a pair of the B&L Discoverer porro a year or so ago. I guess they the best I've looked thru. I have researched the fujinons, and believe them to be very good bins. Will use them mainly early and late from box stands. Will carry the wp's when still hunting.        &nbs p;

Well, I got the 7x50 FMTR SX in the mail.
They are big, but very clear, crisp, and bright. Will be very nice late in the evening in the hunting stand. Four hundred dollars well spent. Although I will never convince my wife of that.         & nbsp;         & nbsp;        John&nb sp;           & nbsp;         & nbsp;         & nbsp;
