Looking for advice for a scope for my heavy barrel 16" AR. I would prefer a variable since I shoot as close as 50 yards and as far as 300 yards. I have a Vari-xIII 3.5-10x40 Long Range M3 on my .308 and I love it, but I can't justify that much right now for my AR. I am considering a VX-II 3-9x40, a Burris FF II Tactical 3-9x40, Simmons Aetec Master, or one of the Monarch scopes on sale right now. Optical quality, finger adjustable knobs, and variable power matter the most to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fight the urge to make this a sniper type gun and put an EOTech on it.

If you feel you need a traditional optic look at Sightron SII  1.5-6x42 or this Burris:

Finger adjustable knobs? For what? Some people just want to play with thier knobs.  50 to 300 yards is a one battle field zero.  Set and forget

If I had $400 blow and a sweet 16" AR, I would put an EOTech 512 on it....one of the best things is you can roll with it "as is" without any special mounts and upgrade to something QD later on if you so feel led (I assume you have a flattop receiver).  BTW the SWFA website (incorrectly?) identifies it as a 510, the link with the stock number is correct though (512A65).  If you really decide you need magnification...you can go with their kit down the road (but I don't think most would find the need).

The Eotech is on the future wish list. I have an Aimpoint Comp ML2 on a QD mount. I also have an ATN 5x33L with a dot center that is not that great for target work. I am about to start handloading for the AR and want a fairly precise scope for working up the loads.

Fullfield II tactical scopes are pretty decent, although I think Sightron S2 is a definite step up in glass quality.  For your ranges I would not worry about getting a trajectory compensating reticle.  If you go with the Burris, consider a 3P#4 reticle.  It offers a good combination of fast target acquisition and precise aiming.

With Sightron, a standard plex reticle will work well.

Nikon Monarch scopes are optically comparable to Sightron S2 and offer a raging bargain at current prices.  HOewver, I think that Sightron S2 has more accurate and repeatable adjustments.
