I'm new to long range shooting (and the forum) and I bought a program called shooter ready. Has anyone used this and is it a good learning tool. I don't want to learn something that isn't right. It seems like its legit but thought I'd ask the experts.

More info on the program would help: who makes it, what authority has the instructor, etc?

I might play with the demo but wouldn't lay down $$ for the thing.

In a world with David Tubb and Thunder Ranch and my beloved USMC; I wouldn't put money on anything that doesn't have someone real backing it.

Take the money, spend it at the range, and you'll be much better off.  Find a range with multiple yardlines.  And if you have a mil dot reticle, get a mil dot master and a Wind Swag.

And here's something for free:

1.  Trigger control

2.  Breath control

3.  Consistency

4.  Practice

Save your money, there's beter ways to spend it

Well I have a copy of it and if for no other reason than the entertainment value I'd say it's worth the $20. Granted there is no substitute for actual practice however it does teach you how to use a mil dot scope for range finding and the examples of how wind and other factors affect bullet path are also useful. While it would be nice to be able to spend time each day on the range I find that it is not always possible even though I have full access to the ranges where I work. So I say play with the bargain $20 program when you are stuck at your computer and when you can get to the range - learn what your rifle, your scope, and your chosen ammo actually do. Consistency in ammunition is a key factor you should select the right bullet weight for the twist in your barrel and then pick one type of ammo.

As he said, there may be value in the familiarization.

Since you have it, mimic as accurately as possible.

And know that practice makes good shoots better.  And the confidence that comes from putting holes in small targets down range can't be gotten anywhere but behind the gun.

Speaking of good shooters better, anyone gonna see the Marky Mark movie, "Shooter"?  I enjoy the movie version of precision tactical fire.  Kinda like the scene in jarheads where the target takes up the entire mil dot reticle (I'd range him just over 9 mils) and the spoter calls the range to be 900 yards.

(2)(1,000)/9 = 220 yards.  A 900-yard adjustment would be "a swing and a miss!"

Though nothing beats the original, "Sniper" for goofy BS movie shooting. Simultaneous 1,000 head shots, nice!  But the ghillie suit is exactly what a ghillie suit should be.  Were it the real deal, it would have orange "X"s somewhere in there where the isntructor said, "you need more material here."  But that's anotehr post for another forum.

Enjoy the program, leave the mil dot, how to range, how to adjust; but don't mistake range time for computer time.

I own the program and it is excellent in my opinion.  Mil ranging and wind doping are covered as well as Minute of Angle, shooting at moving targets, etc.

Well worth the money.

Thanks for the feed back. I just got my rifle a Remington 700 sendero in 300 win mag i bought used. Probably a little over kill but I would like to get to 1000 yards some day. I do need some serious range time with it. Thanks again.

Practice, practice, practice.

I have a 300 and it loves Black Hills 190gr BTHP molys, they shoot clean, they shoot true, and Cabela's has them for a decent price.

Play withe the program, and I'd recommend a mil dot master and a Wind Swag, if they are made for 300 win mag.

1,000 yards is a challenging shot. But very doable with a good gun, good mounts, good optics, good ammo, a little luck, a lot o' practice, and some measure if skill.

A lot of folks like that program, and as long as it teaches reticle-ranging it's a fine way to learn the system before attempting to apply it. I learned reticle-ranging right out my front window, and it's fun to play with. If u have ballistic reticles or even a plex reticle the mil-ranging formula can be slightly modified to use it for these and other reticles as well, and that's even more fun to play with.

The book by Maj. John L Plaster " The Ultimate Sniper " has a lot of details information on ranging, shooting uphill and downhill etc.  It is available from http://www.paladin-press.com - www.paladin-press.com if you can`t find it in your local bookstore. It is updated and expanded from the first edition. It is also fun reading for gun and long distance shooting fans.
