tough call between the 4200 and the monarch, both are very good scopes and since i dont own a 4200 i will have to take the biased road and tell you to pickup a monarch, but either one is a great scope for the dollar.

If you can still get the Monarch on sale, go for it. If not, the Elite is an excellent buy.

I'm happy with the plex type reticles for big game.

Parallax is not a concern on big game with any of these scopes.

A 40mm objective set at 6x will allow you to differentiate from a small herd at 200yards what the 4x fixed may not. Any of them are better than irons for low light, though. All of the scopes listed have good glass.

Don't worry about what the shooters are mounting scopes with on their Stolle's, they are concerned about inches in tenths. Big game guns are fine if they are moa or slightly better. Variance in the field trumps a 1/4' here or there. Talleys,  Burris and several other all steel mounts will work just fine. We have  good reports on the Talley aluminums at O.T., also.

Welcome to the O.T.

would you be happier with one of these low power variable scopes?  Also the Sightron 1.5-6x42 might be a good choice.

Sir Bunny,

I feel that you are a bit too concerned with parallax, for whatever reason.  Help me to understand your concerns.  You want "bullet proof" adjustments, but do not care about glass quality those statements are at odds with one another. Better quality glass also gets you better mechanicals, and the converse is also true. Normally, you get what you pay for...

I'd go with the 4x nikon.... No, I would not personaly, it is a great scope, but to be this picky then, I would see if there was Kahles 4x on the sample list or the 4x Conquest and spend twice or three times as much.  Most people would pay less and get the 4200 3x9 and enjoy.  They are great for the money. They are very clear.

"given that parallax error increases with magnification and this scope is for hunting I dont want a parallax
adjustment."

that is not true. it depends at what distance the scope is set up to be parallax free, not the magnification.

none of the scopes you mentioned nor, for a fact do any decent quality scopes have wandering crosshairs at the
range they are set up to be parallex free, nor at any practical hunting range.

my old Lyman and Weavers will shoot just as good groups as a modern scope. all they give away is a bit of sharpness
and brightness over a scope 40 years newer and costing 5 times as much.

the Monarchs are the best deal around today as long as SWFA has them. if you want the absolute best get a
30/34mm S&B, swaro or zeiss. $s in =s quality out.
