Pictures, pictures!!!!  Sounds like a lot fun until I got to the Alaska part---  sure you don't want to rethink the caliber part? Anything that can stand higher than by truck and open its mouth wider than my German Sheperd needs serious caliber.

If the scope is solid, accuracy with it is repeatable, and the glass looks good to your eyes I wouldn't worry about it being too old.  One caveat may be if it is still water proof, understand that in Alaska it is either raining, has just stopped raining or is just about to rain.  Fogging could be an issue.

My take would be to keep the power to an absolute minimum.  Thick alders, critters with big teeth & high power magnification is not a good mix.

That gun is NO GOOD!!! I suggest you ship it to me immediately without hesitation. I will dispose of it accordingly.

The old .348 is a gun made for Alaska. It's no super long range gun but should be completely adequate inside 200yds. While the scope was probably the best ther was in the day, I would feel more comfortable with a newer rig on top. Like dogger said, it may not hold up to the elements like a newer one. The magnification is fine. I would put nothing larger than a 6x variable on it and would be comfortabble with a fixed 3 or 4 power.

Now post some pictures of that gun. We all like gun porn.

Silvertips not a good choice, and I have killed a couple of moose and bear with a 30-06- its not a read thing.

A good Alaskan bear gun.  416 Rem Mag in Win Express NEGW irons.

Dude... If it is marked as you say, it is a collectors item.  I would not let it any where near the baggage monkeys at the air port.

Dale, you never cease to amaze with your guns.......................outstanding.
For the .348, 250gr. is a good weight for penetration that you will definitely need. Don't know about the Silvertip, though. There are other .250's out there

You have a definite collectors item.  Why not keep it safe & if you want to hunt with a handy lever go to a Guide gun in 45-70 or 450 Marlin.  If you have a few more bucks have a look at Wild West guns or Brockman's.

How long will it take to sail up there?    BTW...... Silvertips are NOT "premium" ammunition.

Good luck on your adventure......... please post pics when you're back!

kazijoy, trying to be charitable here.

Unless you are going on a guided hunt would suggest you read reports on the demise of Timothy Treadwell & increase your life insurance accordingly.  You are a long way from ready for this type of game.  Start by contacting some experienced guiding outfits get their advise and then put off your hunt for at least a year until you have had time to get a suitable firearm, read up on brown bears and practiced  with said firearm a LOT.

If you're going anyway I will send details so you can set me up as recipient in your will for the 348.

Is Traedwell the fella ingested then digested and expelled from the other end by one of his bear "friends"?

Kazi, if you can shoot that rifle well, then I say go for it. Sounds like you will be in good company.

Now where are the pics of that riffle?

kazijoy, sorry if I came on a little strong but was concluding from some of your earlier posts that this was an inherited gun with which you have had little or no experience.  Brown bear hunting is not an ideal first time hunting experience in my opinion.  If you are an experienced hunter on other game & are being guided then I misspoke.

As to you ballistics question will leave that up to the more experienced guys here.

Congratz on the 348. My grandfather hunted allover the US canada and alaska with one. His well worn model 71 sits in my gun safe. Its a real classic.

As for the 250 silvertips. My general impression is that the need for premium bullets decreses as bullet impact velocities decreases. Tho I have never done more than carry the model 71 on a few easy deer hunts I have realitivly extensive experience with 358 winchester. at the 358 winchester impact velocities (2500 or so) its about impossible or at least very difficult to get a  cup and core bullet to break up or seperate its jacket. This is in start contrast to what cup and core bullets do when I shoot them from cartridges that generate 600 or 700 more FPS. In those Cartridges a premimium bullet is what I do choose, at least for game larger than deer.

When I shoot big things I like a decent sized bullet that will penatrate and I have found that heavy for weight ( 250g in 348 qualifies) at a reasonable speed. These bullets penatrateI think would serve you well. Elk moose and a non coastal Griz the 348 should be great. Is 348 well suited for Brown bear? thats a whole another discussion.

I can't say I know a thing about the construction of old silvertips in 348,. if it were me I would shoot some into wet paper next to any other bullets for the 348 I could get and make sure they hang together.

Silvertips are a deap soft lead core with an aluminum shell that was layered over the lead to protect from deformation during the cycling of the weapon. They still work pretty well in handguns were penetration is not as important. This represented one of the states of the art of bullet making. A short time later RWS invented the H mantel which was later copied by Nosler and sold in the US as the partition-- this was another changing pt, realizing the short comings of bullets such as the Silvertip, up to the current date were solid coppered control expansion bullets give exceptional performance at very high velocities, which has been the bain of cup and core bullets.

On Yogi, who can deflect a bullet , with 1/2 thich bone on its head alone, the bullet such as a silvertip will just expand, with little or no penetration. Yogi now realizing it's you or him, with the speed, that can outrun a racehorse for at least 100 yds. will test the hypothesis that 4 claws can rip thru flesh with the speed of light, or at least faster than you can cycle your gun under pressure. If your lucky and the shot is well planned you may take a side shot as he circles you unsure of the sickenly human smell, and break a shoulder, slowing his charge to maybe 10 mph.

Moose hurt easy, any 6mm, will take them, one doesn't have to worry about the charge, unless it is late winter and you are in their feeding ground. I've taken elk with handguns with traditional and cast bullets and know people who have taken yogi with cast and a handgun, but they all had guides with at least 375 HH. backup.

Something with a tungsten carbide core would be nice.

Dale, had a look and there appears to be a scarcity of 348 factory loads that I think would be a good choice.  Are there custom loaders we could recommend?

Can't think of the name, but there is a company that makes loads for cowboy action shooters -- that I'm sure could fix her up.

That is a fine seaworthy swan, I just sold my sailboat last year age is catching up with me. I have a friend with the same gun. It is a collectors item,  I would go for a more modern rifle for moose or bear if you are definately after a bear I would check with Red bear guides at their website .

http://www.redbearguides.com - www.redbearguides.com   they are experenced in bear hunts. Their phone number is 907-301-8775

Good luck and good sailing
