I am interested in a new Zeiss scope for my 7MM-08 hunting rifle. If I go with a 40mm objective over a 50mm, will this decrease the available light at dawn & dusk. The 50mm has about 36% more area in the objective lense! Will this even be noticable? Thanks!

yes, it will be noticable - if you are worried about the last legal minute of shooting time - get the 50MM....

or save money by getting the 56mm meostar by meopta - i like them better than zeiss conquests.

it'll be even brighter. good luck.

my 2 cents.

+1 well said jonbravado

I'm a fan of 50-56mm front objectives if the ability to collect light is your top priority.  Remember that the quality glass & coatings used on the respective scope plays a bigger factor in "light gathering abilities" than front objective size.  All to together in relation to light collection...

J is correct.  I have plenty of 50mm scopes, but seem to always prefer the 40 and 42 mm scopes for their lower profile and comfort you have in the shooting position.  Hunting, I have never had a problem with these scopes in the legal hours, but some places it is legal to ahoot at night and later in the evening and this is where these scopes come in handy.  So, unless you fit into this category, I prefer the smaller objective.  The 7mm-08 is usually a dimunitive rifle and can sometimes look out of place with such a large scope, as well as making it heavier and disrupting  the balance.  But, you did not mention what rifle you have.  Never owned a Zeiss or Meopta, but both have great reputations.

Guys,

The rifle is a Rem 700 Ti so I was worried about the balance and general looks of the larger objectives myself! I like the slender look of the 40mm, but cannot resist the larger 50mm! (cake and eat it to stuff - LOL) Plus the larger 50 & 56 bells have some weight to them!

Dolphin, you make a good point about the 7mm08 -

i put a 56mm meostar on my tikka T3 7mm08 -

it is a smaller framed gun and the scope looks a tad large.

but i don't mind that way a gun looks (although i think my gun is quite attractive  )

i sit longer and shoot earlier than anyone i hunt with.

you DO have to weigh those options.  good point.

the 50 mm meostar would be a wonderful compromise.

J, in the end, you are right, its all about preference.
