I am wanting to scope a 10/22. The gun is stock - stainless and laminated grey stock.Accordingly, I'd like a scope and mounts with a matte silver or nickel finish.

I want it to be a small, handy rifle. Accordingly, I'd like the scope to *not* have target turrets, AO adjustments, or other fiddly bits to snag on clothing and brush, and divert my attention from surroundings.

After browsing around a bit, I think I like the Weaver RV7. Nice & small, reputed to be reliable and hold zero, as well as good optical quality, available in matte silver, and affordable.

My biggest question now is mounts. Is there any advantage in using a Leupold or other aftermarket base, or is the existing Ruger base sufficient? What rings do I use with the Ruger factory 10/22 base? Standard ".22" rings? I get the impression that the Ruger factory 10/22 base is wider than the typical ".22" grooved receiver.Am I mistaken?

I would recommend a good aftermarket weaver mount,

this will allow for many mounting solutions as your optics

and interests change and will be a more solid mount..

The Ruger base works fine with most .22 rimfire scope rings.  Burris makes some excellent .22 rings.  I have them on my 10/22, and use the Ruger base.    The cheap rings that come with most inexpensive .22 scopes are too high, and pull your cheek off the stock.

A Bushnell 4X rimfire scope isn't fancy, but it seems to work fine at the low-end price range.  The (customized) rifle will shoot 1/2" groups at 50 yards with it using Eley Tenex ammo.  I will probably upgrade the scope, but don't expect the groups to get any better.
