My question is simple.  Is the HD SS 5X20 the equal of the Nightforce SHV in brightness, clarity of image and turret repeatability?  I lean toward the SWFA product from past purchases but I do NOT want to make a mistake in this selection.  Scope will be on a Panda chambered in 284 Win. an used from 200  to 1200 yds. on small [6 in, square] to medium [16 in square] swinging steel targets.  Many thanx... Gary

This will be a good comparison thread for me to haunt. 

I've never seen the SHV, but the glass of the SS is pretty damn good. I'd frankly be surprised to see someone here who's had them side by side giving the NF the edge in that regard, but we shall see. 

I think the SS glass beats any NXS I ever looked through.

Yes.  Similar mechanical quality.  Optical quality is a little better with the SS HD.

SHV, on the other hand, has a zero stop, which the SWFA 5-20x50 does not.

Another notable difference is eye relief: SS HD has about an inch more eye relief than the SHV.  Field of view at the same magnification is about the same (slightly wider for SHV).

Aside from that, you basically have to decide which magnification range works better for you and which reticle you prefer.

If you are trying to shoot a 6" target at 1200 yards, I would assume a little more magnification is a good thing.  The reticle preference is in the eye of the beholder.  I have a fair amount of hands on time with both Mil-Quad and Mil-R and like them both.

A friend of mine has a SHV and after looking through it I was TOTALLY UNIMPRESSED.  It was so bad in fact that I am sure there is a problem with that particular scope so I do not want it to influence my decision........ but then March does nothing for me either so the problem might just be...ME?  Say it ain't so.Behead

That just means that your eyes respond well to contrasty images.

You will like SS HD more.

Make sure you never look at Leica Magnus or Tangent Theta riflescopes. That will have a detrimental effect on your wallet.
