Howdy fellas , I am considering a 3-18x50 vx6 scope with the fire dot duplex to go on a Louisiana deer rifle where deer and hogs often show up in near  darkness at feeders that are often over 200 yards away some times twice that far. In the off season it will be on the steel range out to the 700 yard mark.   The CDS appeals to me on this model with its low profile and the ability to provide accurate drop compensation. Can any body suggest a scope in this price range and configuration that would be a better choice.
Thanks Mike

These would seem to be somewhat competitive.   I have a 1-4 Trijicon with the red post that I really like but if this one had been on the market I would have picked it. I zero the point of the triangle at 200 yds and know that anything closer will be a tad over it.  Nothing is faster onto the target in low light or brush and since its fiber optic and tritium you do not have to turn it on and there is no battery. If you will work out past 200 yds much the CDS dial or being able to dial in correction can be a nice feature.  Kenton Industries will custom engrave knobs for many different scopes which accomplishes the same thing as CDS.   The Swarvoski has its own system similar idea.

How do they stack up in the low light department . I just sold a night force NXS that was a good scope but the low light performance has me looking for something better .

Swarovski and Kahles are really hard to beat as far as quality of glass in low light. I like the Trijicon really well and nobody else uses the tritium illuminated reticle which is really useful in low light or with fast target acquisistion.  I have heard a lot of positive comments about Leupolds VX6 also but try to look through them yourself if at all possible because we are talking about a big investment when you get to this level of optic and sometimes quirky little things like the style or feel of knobs or design of reticle etc can make or break a deal. Here again there is a huge differenc between what is a great hunting optic and what is the ideal long range target optic.  I have a 5-20x 50  Super Sniper with illuminated Mil Quad reticle and it is a very nice long range optic in this price range and has HD glass.  If a lot of your time this rig will be used for long range target and you can live with true tactical knobs this is a great choice. If you want fast on target and the primary use is hunting and want lower profile knobs then the Trijicon and Swarovski are ones to look at and compare to the VX6.  There are other choices when it comes to true tactical scopes though the IOR scopes seem to have superb glass from Schott Glass - Germany.  US Optics, Nightforce etc are a lot more money . The Gen II Vortex Razor would be hard to beat:

I am really wanting a jam up low light hunting scope.... something that will extend shooting light but has a use on the steel range in the off season . My rifle it is to be mounted on is a M700 with a #7 barrel in a A5 stock. The NXS just, seamed dark. Also if I could get a kenton turret with 1/4 moa it would open up my options considerably. Thanks

I've owned a Leupold VX6. The VX6 was a 2-12x40 CDS Firedot model. My son bought a Meopta Meostar R1 which lead to a comparison of glass as the sun went down. Needless to say I was stunned to realize that the Meostar R1 was slightly better optically. Also, the VX6 appeared to have a very slight white haze the darker it got while the Meostar R1 remained clear. I sold the VX6 and bought a Kahles 3-10x50 CL with the Multizero turret. Problem resolved. The Kahles CL is as good if not very slightly better than the R1 and it has the Mutlizero turret which is similar to the CDS once you learn how to use it.

The only Leupold I currently own is a VX2 mounted on a 30/30. I will not buy another "high end" Leupold until they get their act together regarding glass.

When you say the scope seemed dark this may help.  The eye pupil of a healthy adult  is about  7mm and  you can determine how bright the scope will be based on the magnification. example

50mm objective    7 x 7 = 49 so a 50 mm objective on a scope that is set at 7 power has about a 7mm exit eye pupil therefore appears very bright.

42mm objective scope  6 x 7 = 42 so a 42mm objective at 6 power or any power lower will have at least a 7 mm exit eye pupil and appears very bright.

Now take a 20 X scope no matter what brand if it has a 42 mm objective on the front you are dividing 42 divided by 20 power = 2.1 mm exit eye pupil which might be ok in bright daylight but sucks in low light.

To make the image brighter in low light decrease the magnification
.  Even dropping down to 10x will significantly brighten a 42 mm objective.  Similarly using a larger objective like 56mm objective will allow you to gain a significant advantage in low light if trying to work at higher powers.  a 10X scope with a 56mm objective has a 5.6 mm exit eye pupil and is pretty bright.
Also as we age our eyes may not get all the way to 7mm eye pupil.   Quality of glass matters but if you have a scope that is good quality like a Nightforce NXS you may not gain enough advantage to make it worth making the jump to something else because you pay a lot more to gain a little more advantage.

If price was no object I'd certainly want to look at  these recommendations from Koshkin the high end Zeiss and Swarovski scopes are amazing optics:
http://opticsthoughts.com/?page_id=94 - http://opticsthoughts.com/?page_id=94

You also could consider using detachable rings like Talley or La Rue and run two different types of optics.  For low light hunting its hard to beat an illuminated optic like Trijicon but there are better choices for dialing in correction.

Take any of the scopes you have go out in low light and see how much difference there is.  Note the  power the scope is set on, and compare to how bright the image is.

In thick cover, I'd opt for the Firedot #4 reticle, my friend. I have the Duplex and I really like it, but I'd probably go #4 next go around.

Well fellas I appreciate all of the great info . I decided to go with the 3-18x50 vx6 with the fire dot duplex. while waiting for it to come in I went hunting  for pigs before deer season opens and realized the benefit   a fire dot would have, after watching hogs under the feeder through my kahles 8x42 binoc's . I was able to see the hogs well enough with the Meopta 3-9x50 #4  but the fine crosshairs were not visible yet . In all fairness the feeder is 430 yds, away and I am probably asking a bit much from a scope . Any who while waiting for more day light a decent boar stepped out at 200 yds. and that was all she wrote.
