In my search for a new scope for my CZ 455, I noticed that many of the newer scope designs seem to have larger ocular lenses/bells than say, older designs or certain manufacturers.

Why is this? Is there some advantage to a larger ocular lens?

Likely just sales driven. There are plenty of choices in all sizes. Buy what you like and don't worry about trends. JMO.

Larger ocular lens group provides increased FOV, all else being equal.
