Fellas, I have been using the meopro line for about 5 years and now I have begun a new 7mm rem mag project to be used for right of way and sendero shooting at distances over 500yds and in the last minutes of light at closer distances.I am considering the Meo* 3-12x56 with the McWhorter MV retical.
Amy reviews or experience with this scope is appreciated.
Thanks

Don't have the McWhorter, but I have a 56MM R1 with the illuminated 4K reticle I use for low light whitetails on green fields as well as longer distance shots on power lines. Has performed really well for me. Very stable/reliable despite the knocks and bangs that come with typical hunting situations. Taken bucks that once got by me in poor light while using other well rated scopes. Likewise, have taken several beyond 300 yards in more open spaces. Have compared it in low light with a 56 MM Zeiss HT that I also own. Thus far, with my aging eyes, I can see very little, if any, difference between the two under those lighting conditions. Will do more testing, however. Just my experience. Hopefully, others will chime in.

Thanks, my eyes are breaking over the hill as well and really good good glass helps. The McWhorter ret appeals with the first focal plain allowing me to dial back the power with out affecting the subtension of the retical.what would be nice if there was a modle with a CDS style turret for elevation.

I love Meopta scopes. The McWhorter... not so much. Too busy for me.

I think Kenton Industries makes a turret for the R1 scopes equivalent to the CDS.

That is interesting,so here is another thing to ponder. Will the elevation adjustments withstand the constant use like a tactical or target scope will have n terms of repeatability? Or should I just reconsider my options and look at a r1 in the 4-16x variety. 1 am approaching the price range of a VX6 3-18x50 which I here great things about. My only concern with the vx6 is low light performance.

The Meopta Meostar was designed specifically for night hunting.  It has an average 93% light transmission through the entire lens set.  Won't get much better than that and I firmly believe it is a much better optic than Leupold.  I don't crank the knobs much on my Meostar R1 3-12x56 w/4B reticle, but the adjustments are accurate, consistent, audible and tactile.  It is one of my favorite scopes, a true VALUE.

I've not heard/read a single complaint about the durability of the MeoStar turrets, but also don't know how many are used by the tactical crowd.  Another scope that might work for your application while still in the same price range as the R1 and VX6 is the Leica ERi 3-12x50.  It's available with capped or target turrets (I believe the target turrets on the 3-12x50 are locking and have a zero stop).

I agree with Boxer. I'm a former Leupold fanatic, but not any longer. They have some fairly good scopes but need to up their game before I get back on board. I have owned the Leupold VX7, VX6, and VX3. Recently, I bought my son a Meopta Meostar R1 4-16x44. Not long after we mounted it on his rifle we compared my VX6 and the R1 side by side as the sun went down and I was astonished to learn that the R1 has better contrast and resolution. Turning the diopter on the VX6 couldn't change the R1's superiority. It was plan as day. So to remedy the situation, I sold the VX6 and bought a Kahles CL 3-10x50 and I'm waiting for it to arrive. There are a few guys I pay attention to on this board and Boxer is one of them. It hasn't always been that way but I've learned the hard way.

How much low light performance will I loose if I go with a meopta meopro 4.5-14x50 HTR as opposed to a Meo*. Also the R1 is available in ffp vs.sfp , I have only owned one ffp scope ,it was a ss 3-15 and my complaint was that the cross hairs were too fine on low power for low light work. Will this be a issue with a duplex ffp r1 or should I be looking at the sfp verision

The Meopro is on the Zeiss Conquest level. The Meostar R1 is above the Leupold VX6 level. My sons Meostar R1 is an etched SFP reticle. That's about all I can tell you. I hope that helps.

There will be some advantage to the Meostar over the Meopro… IF (big IF) you need it.  If you are going to hunt at night, get the Meostar… if only until "legal hunting hours" expire, the Meopro will serve just fine.  As far as FFP vs SFP with one of the #4 reticles… I don't think it will be an issue.  I prefer FFP in most cases(personal preference), but SFP has never caused me to miss a shot…  I particularly wanted the 4B reticle, but have several times wished I had gone with the illuminated dot.  It would have suited me better… BUT, I'm not getting rid of the 4B...

Narrow long lanes in dark timber with critters that show up in twilight is the normal scenario.

If you have a real possibility of shots at dark-thirty, you should take a hard look at the illuminated reticles in the R1, R2, or VX6.  The thin wires in the Meopta's can get a little hard to see up against a dark background, very late.  The regular duplex in the VX6, not so much.  Can't go wrong with any of these IMO, and the R1 definitely does not blow away the VX6.

The R1 was (and may still be) available in SFP as well as FFP. I prefer and own the illuminated #4 SFP, but that's just me. Have a hunting friend who likes his Z-Plex FFP equally well. Reticle pros and cons both ways. Also have a 50MM Meostar with #4 reticle and no illumination. Having used both I would definitely recommend the illuminated dot or cross for low light hunting. As a companion piece for low light I likewise would suggest a good pair of binoculars, 50MM or larger. All things being equal, you can see better with two eyes, two barrels than you can with the single barrel a scope provides. They are particularly useful when you need to do some counting in the shadows and the scope alone won't quite get you there.

I have two r1's that sit a top my varmint rigs. The 22 wrm wears the 3-12 x56 sfp with the 4K ret. This setup is strictly used at night and works great also I can use my 3-10x50 with the #4 ret with out any problems in legal low light conditions. http://s906.photobucket.com/user/coyote95/media/Picture074-1.jpg.html">

I agree Raider, the R1 does not blow the VX6 away but according to my eyes and my sons, the R1 has a touch better resolution and contrast. But it was obvious to us which was optically superior. Also, we both saw a slight white haze in the VX6 when the R1 was crystal clear. We had them both set on 5 and was looking into bushes at 150 yards when the sun was fading out, long past legal light.

Meopta = world class products IMO.  Love the R1's, and glad they work so well for you guys.  Love the Meopro as well.  I personally value eyebox freindliness and retention of POI above pure optical prowess, and that's where the VX6 shines IMO.  I'm all for a guy using whatever he wants, for whatever reasons he wants.  I'm probably going to buy a SS3-9x42HD next week to see what all the fuss is about.  I must have lost my mind......

The Meopta S2 spotter is amazing as well.

Has any of you fellas had a Kenton turret on any of your scopes? I am considering one for the r1, a generic moa will suffice. Mi concern with the r1 is with its repeatability.

The illumination on my 3-12x50 Duralyt died the other day so am thinking for a replacement

Must admit the R1 3-12x56 RD or the 2.5-15x56 RD is looking very good. (Nice mag range, apparently good glass a No 4 type illuminated Ret).

Also, Meopta make a ballistic turret for the R1 and R2s...

I bought a scope that had one installed, worked as advertised.

What are your concerns there?  I don't crank much with this scope, but what I have done has shown excellent repeatability.  No change in POI, accurate tracking from click to click.  When I changed it around on several rifles the adjustments were always as expected.  Pretty much stays on the 300WM, now.  I've "shot the box" a few times with it, no unknowns.

Had mine on 3 different rifles. Set on each, it has never wavered. IMO it is  "set and forget" as a hunting scope. However, can't speak to long range shooting and paper punching where you may want to adjust elevation and/or windage turrets.
