I will buying a 20 SS for my back up scope for 50 BMG Matches. What is the difference between the focal plane and a regular SS scope

The 20x is a fixed power scope, so there is no adjustment.

A first focal plane model is a variable power where when you change the magnification the reticle stays the same size in relation to the target.  So it appears to grow in size when you change the magnification.  The reticle itself is magnified along with your image.

A second focal plane scope, (there are a couple new SWFA 3-15x scopes that are this style) the reticle does not magnify when you turn the magnification up.  It always stays the same size no matter what magnification you are on.  So it does not magnify with the image as you turn up the mag.

Thanks for the information. A 50 BMG match is fired from 1000 yds. I might stay with the fixed power
