Subject: Help with choosing a scope

I am prior service MP from 92-97. I am use to shooting iron sights. I hunt with iron sights on my rifle and use shotguns. I just built a 308 AR platform rifle with a 22 inch black hole weaponry match barrel. I would like to use it for hunting and occasional long distance shooting for recreation. I am new to the scope scene. I can shoot 300 meters in my yard all day long, and have access for shooting up to 1000 meters on my friends property. I want a decent scope for the money, not wanting to spend over $1500. I am not looking for the US Optics, Night Force, S&B, I cant justify the money for my application. I am not going to shoot competitive, just hunt and increase skills. I am looking at the Burris Eliminator III ( I know it does all the work for you), Burris XTR 5-25x50mm, and the Vortex PST 6-24x50mm. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

I am new to the forums here, but have been shooting long range since the late 70's. I just purchased SWFA's SS10X42MQ optic. Fixed 10 power, first focal plane, with the Mil Quad reticle. Mounted it on a Marlin XS7VH in .308. This scope will do everything I need out to 1,100 meters. Optics are clear, and there is ample elevation adjustment on the turret to compensate for any range that the .308 is capable of. Best part is, the scope was only 300 bucks. This is the same scope designed for the Navy. Tiborasaurus Rex has an excellent review of this optic on his You Tube channel. Just make sure whichever optic you choose, that the reticle and turrets are in the same measurements. You don't want MOA turrets on a Mil Dot reticle. If so, there are calculations required for firing solutions. Hope this helps. Big Smile

I mostly agree with rayfoy, but would go with the SS 10xHD.  It is a wonderful scopeā€¦ one of the best 10x scopes I've ever had my hands on, and well worth the price.  As much a "value" as the scope recommended by rayfoy.    However, you can't go wrong with that one, either.

If you were just going to shoot targets with it I think the SS 10XHD would be a great scope. But since you are also going to hunt with it I would want a variable that goes down to 4X at the most. The reason being I would want a wider field of view (FOV). The Leupold 3-18 has a max FOV of 75.9ft and the Burris XTR 5-25 has a max FOV of 21ft.

One of these would be very high on my list.

And yes even 10x at 1000yds is very doable. 10x at 1000yds is similar to your iron sights at 100yds.
It seems to me that most people over scope their rifle when they are starting out. Too much magnification brings in a whole new set of issues to deal with.

Also what ever you do, do not skimp on a mount.

Don't forget the SS 3-15x42.  My hunting distances an be as short as 60 yards.  10x makes it tough to get on target fast.  I have this and the SS 10x on my 6.5 Creedmore.  I'm a fan of both scopes.  I have not looked through a SS HD model.  More to consider.
