Subject: Scope for a 25-06

I recently got a Browning 25-06 that I plan to use to take down some deer and coyotes, and maybe some day bear and elk. I've done quite a bit of research and gone to a couple places to look through glass and have narrowed my decision down to 2 scopes; The Leupold VX2 3-9x40 and The Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42. I've looked through both these scopes, at different times but I haven't been fortunate enough to find a shop that has both scopes in stock at the same time so I haven't been able to compare them directly side by side. This is my first time buying a scope for a rifle as I am only 19 and I've been using the same youth 243 since I was 12 until now. One salesman recommended the Leupold over the Monarch when I asked him his preference, but my father who went with me personally liked the Monarch. I liked the monarch and the BDC reticle, but I've also been told that the VX2 is much clearer and can be ordered with BDC as well. Because I haven't been able to see the 2 side by side I'd like if anyone with experience with either or both could shed some light on the subject. I'm pretty much set on these two scopes but if you absolutely feel the need to mention another scope for under $500 feel free to do so. Thanks in advance for any advice or input you can give.

If you are set on a Leupold might I suggest a slight upgrade over the VX-2, if you are willing to spend $500 that is.  The VX-R.  Same glass quality plus one of the best illumination systems on the market right now.  It just works and works well.

There are a lot of good options that will have slightly better glass than a VX2 for similar prices.  Bushnell elites, Sightron s2 and bigsky, Vortex Viper and Diamondback HP.  Zeiss Terra, Meopta Meopro.

I own both the Leupold and the Nikon and my preference is the VX-2. Both of mine have duplex reticles, track well, have more than adequate eye relief and remain set once zeroed, but with both scopes set at higher magnifications, the Monarch produces much more glare/flare during late afternoon shots into the sun. Just my experience.

I'd also opt for the Leupy over the Nikon. I personally do not like BDC reticles as they clutter up the sight picture... IMO.

Also, as ST eluded to, there are many great choices out there. Don't get hooked on one! The Sightron Big Sky units are very nice as are the Vortex listed. Meopta Meopro are solid as are Minox scopes. Even Weaver and Bushnell have some decent offerings.

Welcome to Optics Talk.

Put me down for the VX-R 3-9x too. I have the Duplex with the Firedot, but the Firedot with the number 4 ST recommended, is probably even better.
