Welcome to the OT. What will he be doing with it and what caliber?

Do you mean like a low powered fixed scope? Like a 4x or 6x? I personally wouldn't want much more magnification than that.

This would be my recommendation for a fixed hog gun scope.

Leupold FX3 6x42 w/duplex reticle is one of the best hunting scopes you can buy, no matter the age of the shooter. Tough, bright, reliable. Meopta makes a nice 6x42 as well.

I think that's just the ticket, great! Do you have one? |
Had one. Put it on a friend's rifle for his kid. Excellent optics for the money and a rugged build.

Yep. Nitrogen purged.
It is a solid scope, friend.

Looks good, any experience with one? |
I have shot lots of hogs and a few cull aoudad with one, as well as a whitetail or two. Ranges varied from 10 yds to 300 yds. It is very easy to get behind, the reticle shows up well at last light, and as I said before it is very bright and durable. The only negative, one in which Leupold needs its' head examined, is that the regular duplex is only available in a gloss finished scope. Not a huge deal, but you used to could order one in matte/duplex. Not sure if you can anymore except through Leupy's custom shop. I think that is a stupid marketing move personally, but it is a killer scope.
Good luck with your purchase. I'm sure you and your son will have a ball hunting/shooting together.....good for you guys!

I had the opposite problem. I WANTED glossy but with a number 4 reticle. Had to order it from the custom shop because the FX-3 6X42 number 4 is only available in matte. That's ok though, price was the same and I had them build me a CDS dial for it too. Not much to dislike about these scopes.

check out this scope, before you finally decide. It is easily as good as the recommended "Leupy" and less expensive. I have one that I have used on AR-10, AR-15's in 5.56, 6.5Grendel, 7.62x39 and it performs exceedingly well. The only reason it doesn't have a permanent home on one of those is no illuminated reticle… which is required for my purposes. I love it and intend to set up a "daytime hunter" just for it in the near future. I'm thinking an AR in 243 or 7mm08:
