I'm a bit surprised to see UCLA picked at #7, but the rest looks reasonable to me.

Looking forward to the start of the season!

UCLA had a pretty big year last season. They whooped Southern Cal and had a pretty good offense. Also beat V Tech like a rented mule in their bowl game, but yeah, #7 "seems" a little high to me too, Ted.

Gamecocks at #9 is a tad high, in my mind. SC has a lot to prove after losing Clowney and more importantly, QB Shaw, (who I think was vastly underrated.)
The #2 guy Thompson has a better arm, but damn Shaw could ball.

Well...looks like 'ol Notre Dame is ranked preseason....AGAIN. Roll Eyes

Yeah, I overlooked ND. They are perennially ranked way too high no matter what. Year after year, they are the most overrated team in college football, bar none. The only team in college football who can somehow remain in the top 10 with 2 and sometimes 3 losses.

Don't know enough about SC to say, but on the surface, they do seem to be a bit overrated too. But, who knows? Auburn totally came out of nowhere last year after their poor season two years ago. Nobody saw that coming at the beginning of the season last year.

I like the playoff, but leave it to the NCAA to screw that up too. 4 games ain't what I'd call a "playoff." I think an 8 game playoff is reasonable.

I'd also like to see them dispense with preseason rankings, which are largely meaningless except to give guys like us something to talk about. Year in and year out there are sleeper teams that weren't ranked high or not at all that prove to be better than some of the preseason ranked teams, and they are penalized because of it. A loss hurts a preseason unranked team much worse than a ranked team and the timing of the loss is pretty significant. I don't like that rather arbitrary "system." It's way too subjective. Win - loss record ain't.

I say rankings should be 100% proven on the field and shouldn't be a factor before the first kickoff of the season. I don't believe rankings should ever come into play until mid season when there's been time for teams to prove themselves, and it should be based solely off a team's W-L record combined with strength of schedule, not preseason hype.

The BCS was a gravy train for the SEC and the bigger conferences, which I have no problem admitting that I liked.
I never cared for the "little engine that could" type schools getting their shot, because my school of choice, is a BIG program. I see this new playoff deal as a threat to keep Florida from at least getting a whiff at the big game.

I'm for any measure/ system that:
    1. Provides fans with additional interesting match-ups to watch that likely wouldn't have occurred otherwise. More football = better.
    2. Eliminates the ridiculously long, unnecessary dead time between the end of the regular season and the start of the bowl games. Less football = bad. Downtime during football season = bad.
    3. Provides additional suspense and unexpected turns of events, and therefore excitement at the end of the season.
    4. Doesn't include hype as factor in who later gets a shot at all the marbles (i.e. the Notre Dame hex).
    5. Ensures every team is fully in control of their destiny based on what they do on the field (no more speculation over whether or not the Boise States of the CF world really could play with the elite teams on a big stage; they'd have to prove it on the field like gladiators).
    6. Makes the eventual National Champion less controversial, for obvious reasons.
    7. Makes the "lesser" upper tier bowl games more meaningful because there's more to play for.

I like the idea that the lower ranked teams and/or those with weaker schedules that reach the playoffs would have tougher matchups in the playoffs via seeding, which helps eliminate the "easy schedule" arguments. This is also another reason why I hate the stupid 4 game "playoff" system.

I still think the "cream of the crop" teams will still usually rise to the top, but they will have to work harder to stay among the elite programs and hype and bias won't play as big a role.

Ah heck...let's just go to a best of 7 series like the NHL. Now THAT'S a playoff, my friend.Big Grin One and done, be it in a playoff scenario, or without, isn't a true test of who's number 1, IMO. But, I get that it has to be this way for various reasons.

I've often said...for the most part, the BCS got it right most of the time, given what they were working with. Meaning, I think the best team won the NC most years.

LOL Mark. Imagine staring at that dreadful color all season... and that damn Rocky Top is about as bad as the Crininole war chant!

BTW, did you ever see the video Ted took of me doing the Gator chomp in front of the NRG center at the Sportsman show last week? Go Gators!

Yeah I'm afraid this will be a tough year for the Gators ... hopefully not as bad as last year's embarrassing fiasco though. The Chimp may be gone unless measurable progress is achieved.

Where's the video, Ric? I didn't see it.

    On Muschamp....

He must do the following to keep his job going in to next year, in order of importance.

    1) Orange ya gonna beat em?
The Gators have beaten The Vols for SEVEN straight years and the last five by double digits. As dismal as last years season was for the Gators, they beat Tenn, which in my mind, probably was the only thing that saved Will's job.
Losing to The Vols this year is much more than just a SEC East loss. It breathes life into new Tenn coach Butch Jones program and removes the Gator spell that has plagued The Vols for a long time. As I mentioned, I'm working now in Knoxville and on UT's campus. The ONLY....I mean ONLY thing the fans are talking about...is beating Florida! Getting this monkey off their backs is a real mile stone for The Vols and if done, Tenn will be another SEC East Achilles heel for The Gators for the next few years, like Ga has become. This might just be their year to break the streak and kill Will's coaching contract.

    2) Speaking of The Dawgs....
The Gators have managed to secure their own 3 game losing streak to The Georgia Bulldogs. This is a HUGE game for Muschamp to win against his alma mater. Ga is in a transition period this year after losing Arron Murray to the NFL. This too is a MUST win for The Gators.

    3) Feelin Cocky??
The Gators have an up and down record against The Old Ball Coach. A much needed win at The Swamp this year against South Carolina would be gravy.
Strangely, I'm not sure this is a "must win" for Will to keep his job. IF...he beats Tenn on the road, beats The Dawgs, and loses a close one to SC, I think he remains at Florida. Like Ga, SC has a changing of the guard at the QB position too, with Shaw leaving.

    4) Beat the cream puffs!!
Florida has a pretty soft schedule the first 3 games with Idaho, E Michigan, and Kentucky at home. Also have Eastern KY at home later and Vandy on the road. Losing to one or more of these teams puts another nail in Will's coffin. No more Georgia Southern's...PLEEEZE! Cencored

Regain dominance in the SEC East. Simple as that. Nobody REALLY thinks they will beat Bammers or Free Shoes U on the road. At least I don't. LSU at The Swamp?? Hmmm.....Wink

I think the key for The Gators is at the QB position. Jeff D has the "potential" to be a GREAT college football quarter back. Kurt Roper, the new OC, has a more run and gun style offence installed and maybe Jeff can use it to win. I hope so.....

Mark, Ted took the video and sent it to you... I thought.

The schedule is a killer, but I'm confident we will be much better than last year's debacle. I do agree, beat Tenn and UGA and the chimp has a chance. How sweet would it be to knock off the crininoles!! Time will tell. If they stay remotely healthy, we may be ok... if not, another disaster will ensue. Should be interesting.

Hopefully our fellow member and Aggie alum, Rifledude will chime in and give us his thoughts on tonight's match up.

As I stated earlier, SC is ranked a bit high at number 9, IMO. Tonight will be a good test for both teams, after losing so much talent to last years NFL draft.

Mark, I think this will be a tough game for us. Despite losing some legendary talent in JF, Mike Evans, and Jake Matthews, I actually think we will still have a great offense. Both our quarterbacks, Kenny Hill and Kyle Allen were 5 star recruits. Hill has college experience already, playing mop up role for JF last year. We are very deep with talent at WR and RB. Look out for "Speedy" Noil and Ricky Seals-Jones.

I don't know what to think about our D this year. We got some promising recruits, but the D is still young and inexperienced overall. Since they can't get much worse than last yr, I predict an improved unit this yr. D Everitt will still be an impact player, and his leadership will be needed. Look out for new DE recruit Myles Garrett, a blue chip player among blue chip recruits! He is a BEAST!

I love it! I don't believe we've ever been this STACKED at WR! Amazing collection of talent! The OL is still dominant, with yet ANOTHER Matthews family member anchoring the line!

And, keep an eye on Kenny Hill! He's no JF, but he played like a poised veteran, with 44 completions and racked up 511 of their 680 total offensive yards! Overall, despite the loss of JF, Jake Matthews, and Mike Evans to the NFL, I can't say I've ever seen an A&M offense this dominant in an opening game...ever!

Defense is greatly improved from last year, which isn't surprising, since they only had one direction to go from last year. Our secondary is still our weakness, but they're still much improved! Keep an eye on freshman DE Myles Garrett. He's a STUD!

I do hope Miami can pull off an upset when FSU comes to town this year. I'd LOVE to see Free Shoes U little apple cart get toppled in Coral Gables.

BIG game tomorrow for Stanford, huh Mike? The Cardinals are at home against Southern Cal.

Speaking of annoying traditions, (Criminoles tomahawk chop Loco ), I hate watching a USC game and listening to that darn music the band plays after EVERY play. Sheesh...

My daughter and I attended the first home game of the season at my alma mater last Saturday, 9-6. My Aggies played Lamar, a Div I FCS team, so predictably, it was a blowout (73-3). Nevertheless, it was the first game in the newly renovated Kyle Field, and tickets weren't anywhere near as expensive as they can be against SEC West opponents. We had a great time despite the lack of on-field suspense.

Before the game, we ran into this guy and his dachshund, which he was obviously VERY proud of! Notice the "GET A L-O-O-O-NG LITTLE DOGGIE" on his hat. His dog didn't seem to mind his costume at all. I think it's fair to say he's a hardcore fan! I appreciated his sense of humor!

My fellow Aggies turned out in force and made some noise!

The sky started looking threatening as team introductions began...

Sure enough, a storm was brewing, and the game was delayed for nearly 2 hours due to lightning. So, they showed excerpts from other college football games on the jumbo-tron until the lightning storm subsided. Seriously, I didn't enhance the sky in post-processing; it really was that deep blue! I tried to get a shot of some of the lightning strikes that got pretty close to the stadium, but wasn't fast enough on the draw.

I don't think that matters too much honestly. Not having M Brown shouldn't be a crutch to winning games.

The entire coaching staff at UT has always been strong. For the last three years I believe UT has been on a decline.  Not that I pay much attention to UT's sports program, just something I have noticed while keeping up with OU, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Oregon on Saturdays.

That's totally unrelated to UT's problems this year. They lost their first game to mediocre BYU 41-7. First, they are without some of their best players, and they were in a rebuilding mode to begin with. Coach Strong has suspended a bunch of players from the team for various legal issues and/or violation of team rules. Second, they lost their starting QB, David Ash, indefinitely due to repeated concussions. Their backup QB, Tyrone Swoops, has potential, but he's very inexperienced and wouldn't start at most programs with halfway decent QBs. Due to his inexperience, UT is currently running a very vanilla offense. His personnel around him aren't exactly able to help him overcome his inexperience either. They have a weak O line and running game. Finally, with A&M's move to the SEC coupled with A&M and Baylor's success in the past couple years, Texas' recruiting has been way down and A&M and Baylor have been getting all the best TX high school recruits who might have otherwise considered UT.

...all of this working against them at a time when they're completely rebuilding a new system under a new coaching staff.

Texas still has to play Baylor, OU, K State, and OK State, and I don't think there's a snowball's chance in hell they'll come close to beating any of them. They simply don't have the talent, and don't stack up well at any position. I wouldn't be surprised to see the horns lose to WV and TCU as well. Who knows; they might pull off an upset in one of those games, but I predict they will go 7-5, maybe 6-6 at best this year.

With the resources and history they have, I believe the Longhorns will eventually rebound. History says they will. Most quality programs have peaks and valleys. Given current realities, I predict their current valley will last at least a couple years, maybe longer depending on recruiting.

Rebuilding happens! My Gators sucked big time last year... this year may be a tad better (with Roper and a better O scheme) but likely will still suck. They have a hefty schedule, and their QB (Driskell) is hot and cold with flashes of stupidity. I wish they would have grabbed up Charlie Strong as he is a good coach. I'm sure Charlie will turn the Horns around in a year or two! Time will tell though.

Gators will definitely rebound in the not too distant future. Like Texas (the state not the team), Florida (the state, not the team) has an abundance of HS football talent, and the Gators have a winning tradition.

    Right, Mark?

Well...let me start by saying this.

I was at a bar in Knoxvegas, talking to a bartender/season ticket holding Vol fan, about college football, who informed me that he had a...(clears throat).... "friend on the inside of all things SEC" who stated that he knew for a fact that Kiffen would be the next head football coach for THE Florida Gators in the not so distant future. I choked on my happy hour hot wing after hearing this news flash. Down the Toilet

To be fair....Kiffen is a very good QB coach with a pretty astute offensive mind set, so there's that. Do I want him to coach my beloved Gators?? HELL NO!!!!
But my man love towards Wil Muschamp is waning....severely. Barely beating an admittedly improved Kentucky team in The Swamp, in the THIRD OT, is just not what I was wanting to see this year.

Now he's got to go to The Tusk and play Saban... a bye...then on to Knoxville.....then back home to face LSU.
This is a tough row to hoe for most any team, let alone a team as psychologically "fragile" as the 2014 Florida Gators. He could easily go 1-2 or even 0-3 in this stretch. The Vol's smell blood in the water and are coming after them.
Oh...and did I mention Florida has Mizzu and GA after LSU??? As much as I like Jeff Driskel, they need to set him down and play that freshman, Treon Harris kid.

Ric, I think a LOT is gonna depend on what happens and HOW BAD it happens in Bammers Saturday.
A good effort, but a loss, and maybe the Gators go to Tenn and beat a resurgent Volunteer squad.

A Bama beat down Saturday and that's a wrap for Gator ball for this season. That last game was VERY telling from what I observed. The Gator's are playing to "not lose", instead of to win. You could see it in their eyes, especially Driskel and the offense.
The team, the Florida fans in The Swamp, were all waiting for the other shoe to drop last Saturday night and there's no way a team like that, regardless of talent, can go play that brutal schedule and come out on the plus side, or maybe even.....even?? Whatever

You heard correctly, Sir. Just another powder puff game on while on their way to yet another championship.

Hey...this fan has NO illusions of an upset, but I must say, for the first time in quite a while, Bammers looks more "average" this year. At least to me.
Bama is a two TD favorite at home today against my beloved team and will probably cover, but I think they will have to throw a bunch to score. Gator secondary is talented, but young.

I sadly concur, Ric. I knew Bama wins that one, but wow......Lane Kiffen is starting to look good right about now.
(I threw up in my mouth typing that.)

I NEVER understood Muschamp. I thought he may come out from half time and put in the freshman QB Harris to shake things up, after Saban adjusted his defense to defeat Driskel.

But NOOOOO.......he let's Driskel, who is clearly mentally defeated, stick it out and lose in a terrible fashion like that. Next up is the Vols on the road......I'm telling ya. This one may finally go Tenn way.

Yes Mississippi State is for real this year!

Held LSU to just 89 yards rushing.  While Josh Robinson for MSU had 197 by himself and Dak Prescott added 105 more.

Bad news for MSU though.  Starting Center Dillon Day is suspended for the Texas A&M game.  Seems he stomped on some LSU players last Sat.  He has been suspended for this before.  So now we gotta start the guy that almost cost us the game with a bad snap.  Bet he gets a lot of practice snaps between now and then.

If so, they accomplished that goal.

Need to call Kenny "Drill" and company, The Cardiac Kids. That was a fantastic come back! I didn't get to see any of the game, until the 4th quarter.

I was watching the play by play of that game on my phone while I was sitting in a blind, bow hunting. It made it very tough to watch for deer! Arky has a good running game but Ags need to fix their lingering problems on D. Offense was obviously out of sync in the first half. The schedule gets much tougher from here, so they better fix the missed tackles and mental mistakes in a hurry!

No, didn't see anything. That might have been due to me constantly staring at my cell phone. A world class buck coulda walked by at certain points and I would've never known.

I think good teams need to "win ugly" every now and then for several reasons:

    - to teach them that they can fight back from a deficit
    - to reinforce that it takes a complete team effort to win games
    - to learn not to get demoralized and quit playing hard when someone hangs multiple-possession points on them
    - use game film as a learning tool for correcting mistakes
    - to not listen to the press and become overconfident
    - to game plan for other teams with the same strengths as the one just played

This of course assumes that the above does happen as a result of the ugly win.

I got to see War Eagle VII, Nova, for the first time this weekend… Amazing bird… Auburn has done an amazing job with their eagles.
She scolded them over defense and they played better...

Where do they get the eagles they use for War Eagle and who trains them?

    That's an uber cool mascot!
