OR .... how I learned to eat Crow Feathers

Well this weekend I was lucky enough to get to the range both days.  Saturday I went with my 25 year old son ... getting to spend some time with him is always a pleasure.  Sunday I got to check out my latest handloads on my Savage 12 VLP (in .223)

I have always been outspoken about needing higher power scopes at the range ... idea being if the target is bigger the easier it is to hit on center.  Needless to say many people on this forum have told me that "bigger is not always better" .... but I'm a pig headed kinda guy.

So my Savage has a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24X Scope on it.  Which, by the way, I always shot set on 24X

Well yesterday I decided to shoot at a lower power .... using 12 X instead of 24X.  First off, let me say that the target was for sure clearer, smaller, but crisp, bright, and clear.

I have to start by saying my new load turned out being very "Savage Friendly" .... BUT, (as he spits out those crow feathers) I have to say that using 12X rather than 24X made shooting easier, and I had no problem centering the crosshairs or hitting my mark.

So  like the title says ... pig headed as I am,  I guess you're never too old to learn ... distance is 100 yards

It was one of those days that things just felt right ..... breathing was in sync with the gentle squeeze

tell ya what too, having it on 12X instead of 24X,having a clearer image, with no mirage, and my focus on the cross hairs of the scope lining up with the cross hairs on the target, instead of the holes definitely helped ....

Thanks Guys ...

I certainly agree with you on the magnification.  I found very difficult to use anything above 15x or so unless you are in absolutely flawless conditions.  More often than not though  I'l shoot at a lower magnification than that simply because my shaking is less visible ... which makes me calmer and less shaky.

Lower magnifacation and smaller objectives is about the only thing koskin and me ever agreed on. LOL

Great group, Macky!!

Good post too.
