Subject: What determines image size?

I have looked through several scopes that have a large, "full" image with only a thin black ring around it. These include a 4-12x40 Vortex Diamondback, 4-12x40 Redfield Revolution, and a 2.8-10 Weaver 40/44.
I have also however looked through several scopes where the image appears small and distant with a thick black ring around the image. These include a 2.5-10x44 Vortex Viper, 3-10x44 Mueller Sport Dot, 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff, 4.5-14x40 Nikon Buckmaster.
My 3-9x40 Burris Fullfield II and Nitrex TR-One 4-16x50 seem to fall some where between the two extremes.
I initially thought it may have something to do with the erector ratio, but most of the scopes I listed are based on the 3x platform. Also, for the most part the scopes all fall within the same price range.
I'm looking to purchase a couple new scopes that are not available to look through locally and was just wondering if there is there a way to tell if the scope will exhibit tunnel vision or a full sized image without actually handling the scope.
Forgive me in advance for accidental ignorance and I look forward to hearing from you all.

Stay with Zeiss and you wont have to worry about that.

I'd like to eventually try a Zeiss, but unfortunately it is not in the budget at the moment.

You might want to give the SWFA SS 3-15x42 a look.

As a matter of fact I do. Generally, if you have a question for me, start a thread and shoot me a PM with a link. Otherwise, I might miss it.
The overall imae size is strictly a function of eye relief and eyepiece diameter. Your eye has a particular field of view and the more of your eye's FOV the eyepiece takes up the larger the image will look.
The presence/size of the black ring around the image is a function of the optical design of the eyepiece.

Thanks for the links Urimaginaryfrnd. That 3-9 conquest would be an option with a trade in.
Thank you Koshkin, that's the kind of answer I was looking for!
So a larger ocular/eyepiece will provide a larger image size.
You mentioned eye relief...will more or less make the image appear larger?
Thank you again.

All other things being equal, shorter eyerelief makes the image appear larger.
