I know that this is an odd request, but I want to find out the accuracy of a few of guns are at 50 and 100yds.  About nine years ago, I went on a mid-life crisis induced buying spree.  Before I could shoot the rifles, I had a back and spine injury that has kept me largely homebound an unable to shoot.  Now it looks like I might be able a somewhat more normal life.  I have wondered for years about the accuracy of these rifles.  I also want to see how much I can tweak that accuracy with handloads.

I have a few old but decent Weaver scopes, but the most powerful is 3-9x.   I was not the worlds greatest shot before I got hurt, and now, 9 or 10 years later... well,  lets just say that I will need all of the help that I can get, even using a benchrest.

This "test shooting scope"  will never see anything but the range, so I do not need anything for low light conditions, is extremely durable, or for that matter, even has clarity at the edges of view. I would be happier with an adjustable objective to take out parallax for short range shooting.  The scope may almost be considered disposable.  I want to spend as little as possible.  I wonder if a Tasco-level scope would be good enough for my purpose.

Thanks

I use a SS 10x Mil Dot I call "Old Faithful" for just such a task. This Sample List 16x should do nicely also.

10x or the 16x SS should suffice.

Thanks, but even that scope is beyond my means right now.  Money is very tight at the moment.

BTW, does anyone know of an inexpensive place to shoot near Durham, NC?

Whats your budget? Do you prefer 1" or 30MM or either?

SVT Tactical will probably chime in here when he reads this. I bet he knows where to shoot around the Triad.
I'm out in Gaston Co. and go down to South Carolina to shoot.

Ring up the Weavers and get out there and start shooting, if that's all you got right now. I have a 3-9x Leupold and shot this 5 shot group at 100 yds off a bench and a bipod.

My budget is $100, maybe $150.  Please do not laugh!  Well OK, laugh, because it may not be possible on that budget.

I wondered if any of the really inexpensive scopes would survive several range sessions with 30-30's and my inexpensive and fairly heavy Ishapore 308.  I might even leave it at maximum magnification, if that would help prevent loss of zero.

Since I will probably never hunt, my tests are really to satisfy my curiosity and for grins.

You "should" be able to shoot decent groups at 100 yards using the 3-9x scopes you already possess, unless your telling me your eye sight won't allow that.

I'm not sure what this means.

You could try a Tasco Target.  I used one on a .308 for a while and it held zero and the adjustments were good.  http://swfa.com/Tasco-6-24x44-Target-Varmint-Riflescope-P4506.aspx - http://swfa.com/Tasco-6-24x44-Target-Varmint-Riflescope-P4506.aspx   I have had one of the 2.5-10x models on my ruger 10/22 for many years and it has worked well.

Bushnell has a similar one.  http://swfa.com/Bushnell-6-24x40-Banner-Dusk-Dawn-Rifle-Scope-P4742.aspx - http://swfa.com/Bushnell-6-24x40-Banner-Dusk-Dawn-Rifle-Scope-P4742.aspx

vortex has the best warranty in the industry and this would be my first choice on your budget. I used a crossfire on an arr. for a while with good success.

As far as ranges Durham use to have a range but I can't think of the name. I'll try to find it. They shoot at Butner range sometimes but it's long range

I honestly do not know if my eyesight is still good enough to use the 3-9x.  It is going to be such an effort for me to get to a range that I am not sure that I want to chance it.  It probably would make sense for me to try what I've got.  I have been known to do dumb stuff, though.Bucky

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

See if you can get in here.  Best one around.  I went several times as a guest and had I stayed in Durham longer I would have joined.

If I remember right this one was one I went to with a friend to sight in his deer gun once.  Was a fairly nice place.  Can't say 100% its it but I think so as it was in Roxboro
