I bought an older rifle, and I have two vintage scopes to choose between. The first is a Leupold M7 4x. I emailed Leupold with the serial number and all they could tell me is it was made between 1950 and 1960. The second one is a Krollmorgen Optical Corp from Brooklyn NY. It's a Bear cub 4x double. It also has Stith Mounts SA Tex on it. The Krollmorgen glass doesn't look quite as clear, but I'm probably never going to hunt with it. I was just looking for some advice what may be the better scope for a 1950 rifle, and which one may be more valuable. Thx-

I'd think the Krollmorgen is more interesting if only because less of a household name. Just a quick glance at eBay shows a bunch around $200 and one M7 for $45. But that could vary from day to day or even at what point an item is. Probably neither is all that valuable so you might as well go for the one that pleases you most.

The Leupold M7 began in 1960 I think.

The Kollmorgen was purchased by Redfield in late 1958 and became the first scope that Redfield marketed.  The Kollmorgen was originally marketed by Stith in San Antonio during the fifties, but in 1956 Kollmorgen stopped that association and began marketing the scopes under their own name until Redfield bought them out. The Kollmorgen has a 26mm tube which would cause problems finding rings.

The Kollmorgen would be more historically correct for the fifties...the M7 would be a 60s scope....the Leupold people need to read up on their own history a little more....

Kollmorgen is probably a less common scope, but both were actually pretty good for their time.

Kollmorgen company is still around, but they have not made commercial rifle scopes in a long time.  They are now owned by L-3.
