I want some opinions on a scope that will go with a Yugo SKS rifle. I plan to shoot at 100 yard mostly paper and maybe some metal plates at 200-400 yards at my local range. I would prefer a fixed power so i can save some money and it seems that i never change the power on my 4-14x50 IOR that i have on my .308 bolt-action from 14x. I am looking at the 20x Super Sniper at about 300 bucks.

I'm thinkin overkill here. Even the 10x is past the statistical accuracy of the gun and loads available. How about something like a 1-5 or 2 thru 7? More important will be getting a good solid scope mount.

boy you're fast- The scope mounts on SKS are usually on the rear cover, which never fits, and even if it did it is not a solid receiver mount. The 10 is a large scope with somewhat heavy (better add no more than scopes in it's class or the replies will be forever) moment. Also the front of scope will get hammered by ejected cases, as it will stick out over the port, the shorter the scope the better. Keep going shorter.

I,m sure as soon as Koshkin gets of coffee break he will have some good ideas.

There was a thread a little while ago about scoping an SKS.

Here is the link:

If you want to put a full size scope on an SKS, you need to either have it offset to the left or install a shell deflector.

Most SKSs though are not exactly target rifles, so I would question the need for a 10x scope, but to each his own.

NOT A GOOD CHOICE.

I tried to scope my SKS - big mistake - while this is a great combat gun out to about 300 yds it is just not designed to mount a scope on the rifle. To clean it you take off the cover which is where the weaver rail is mounted. So every time you clean it you are not on sight anymore. I finally gave up and put the original cover back on it.

I have a 20x Super Sniper which has visited several of my rifles and finally come to rest on a Remmingtron 700 PSS in .308.  The 20x is a good scope for target shooting but it is a little too strong to be a good choice for tactical situations unless you are working at extreme long range over 1000 yds and if you are --- you are shooting very expensive custom made rifles.

I have a 10 X M Super Sniper that is on a 300 Win Short Mag  Win Coyote Light - Awesome scope - in reality all the tactical scope anybody would ever need. I also have two Leupold Mark 4 scopes.  So here is my advise buy the 10x Super Sniper and buy a Savage bolt action rifle with accutriger in what ever cartridge appeals to you.

If you ablosutely must scope the SKS remember that the trajectory is  not very flat so put on something cheap like a

SKS is not the best rifle to scope.  ALthough possible, it is not straightforward.

As for the reeiver cover mount.  THere is one that works (see my link above), but it is not cheap.

If you use a dust cover mount on any of the Kalashnikov family it will require removal for cleaning and maintenance. There are some side mounts available like used on the PSL but they would require modification to the receiver.

There is another option for mounting forward optics to the SKS platform. I saw a stock recently that was of alum construction that had a pic rail on top of the hand guard that screwed into the lower portion of the stock. He has and AimPoint mounted on it. Not being a huge fan of the AK family, I didnt ask who made it. It reminded me of the SAGE M14 stock but for an SKS.

I have also worked on an AK that had a Sure Fire 4 railed forend. If they make them for AK's they will probably have one for an SKS. It was a very roubust and solid mount. This is the best photo of it that I have:

If you are set on the Kalashnikov action I'd recommend looking into a PSL (better know ans the Dragunov) which is based off the RPK LMG. It shoots a a 7.65x54R which will give you longer range & better down range performance should you decide to also use the rifle to hunt with. There are several companies importing them as the, one is Ordance of America LP & they call it the SSG-97.

Good luck with your descision the AK family is a lot of fun to shoot.

Diligaf, if you ever find out who made that SKS stock, please let me know.

A few other comments:  SKS is not from an AK family of any sort.  Two completely different desings firing the same cartridge.

Romanian PSL is not a Dragunov.  PSL is an accurate AKM.  Dragunov gas system is designed differently.  Romanian and Yugoslavian sniper/designated marksman reifles looks like Dragunov visually, but are different, although related designs.  All are good rifles though in their own right and much easier to scope than an SKS (they will be more accurate too).
