Hi guys,

I am from south africa and out here guns are pretty expensive. A remington sps varmint in .308 costs about $1160. Its about the most expensive gun I can afford. I am a veteran hunter, have hunted since aged 6. what do you think of the combo remington sps vrmint 308 and vortex viper pst 4-16x50. We have moved from the bushveld to the open plains and I am not experienced with this. I would like to shoot out to 800m.

I have a SPS Varmint in.308 and it shoots well out to 500 yards the max I have been able to take it around here. You will probably want to ditch the stock as soon as you can as it is a piece of plastic junk.
I have no first hand experience with the Vortex Viper but have read some great things about them.

I would prefer a synthetic thumbhold or pistolgrip stock. For hunting and long range shooting

Welcome to OT Ruben.

A Manners T5A is running about $655 plus postage to S.A will probably be around $100, then when it gets to S.A you will have to pay tax and import duty. Thats around 35% of the price in Rands.

$755 x R 9.09 = R6862.00 + 35% = R9264.00 if you add that to the rifle, at $1160 x 9.09 = R10544.00. That gives you a total of R19808.00 or $2179. And thats if Manners has stock of the T5A and will post to S.A, I think you would be better to look at another rifle, if you are willing to spend that kind of money.

Winchester 70 Ultimate Shadow (R11250.00) or a Winchester 70 Extreme Weather SS (R16780.00 ), or a Remington Model 700™ XCR™ Tactical Long Range (R21795.00. Prices are more or less

Our problem here in S.A at the moment is that we are not recieving anything, unless the importers are hoarding everything for Huntex. No CZ, Howa, Sako, Tikka, Remington. Every Dealer is waiting for stock.

Hi chris,

thanks for your reply. That explains why guns are so expensive in SA. Whats a guy gotta do to get a decent rifle out here, an arm and a leg? sheeezzzz.Sad I can get a Accuracy International 2.0 for about 10k as well but isnt it a bit heavy for hunting? What do you think about the vortex?

They are quite good scopes, I like them. And seeing as most of our hunting is done in sunny conditions, I can't see you having any issues, what are you paying for it? I see at SWFA they are selling for $700 to $800, for that type of money look at the Lynx scopes as well. LX2 4- 12 x 40 for around R5500 or if you can afford a bit more the LX2 2.5-15x50 for R9000. They are made in the same factory that makes the Nightforce scopes, not to the same specifications of course. But they have excellent glass, and have a Lifetime garantee.

I got a H-S Precision Varmint stock on eBay for just over $200 U.S. I don't know what it would cost shipped to South Africa. Being a Model 70 fan the Winchester mentioned above would be a better rifle if you can get one. I got the Remington on sale but replaced the trigger and stock. It is a very good rifle and it was still quite a bit less expensive than the Winchester even with the stock and trigger but I still sometimes wish I had waited to get the Winchester.

Hi Reuben,

I'm also from SA and also looking at the same combo you posted earlier this year. Did you purchase the Vortex and how is it performing?
