I wanted a new scope for my deer rifle, so I went with a safe bet, a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.  I took it to the range and zeroed it in and then took it on a weekend trip to the deer lease.  Problem is, at both the range and out in the field I was constantly struggling to get my eye in just the perfect place in order to see a full image without the annoying black tunneling.  I tried every adjustment on the thing, but it was a nonstop problem.  Furthermore, I wasn't real happy with the clarity at low light.  (To be fair, I've been spoiled by my Trijicon Accupoint 2.5-10x56.)

I'm now in the market for a new scope, but it's frustrating that I can't actually look through them before ordering them and subsequently incurring shipping costs and restocking fees.  I'd like to find something in the 2-10x40 range (but I might opt for a 42mm or 50mm objective if necessary).  I'm willing to spend about $1,000-$1,300 if necessary, but it would be even better if I could keep it in the $700-$1,000 price point.  This would be purely for hunting deer and similar game, from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.  The majority of shots would be 300 yards and under.  I'd like to get something that's uncomplicated, with superb low light transmission, and an easy point-and-shoot eye relief.  I'm leaning toward the German glass, but I'm open to other ideas, too.

Any good recommendations?

IF I were you I would get a Swaro Z3 3-9x36 or the 3-10x42.  http://swfa.com/Swarovski-Z3-Riflescopes-C1808.aspx - http://swfa.com/Swarovski-Z3-Riflescopes-C1808.aspx

Swaros do not have the tunneling issues that some others do.

Are you sure you have it setup for the proper eye relief?  Conquests have like 4 inches, sometimes if you are to close to the scope you get that tunneling effect.  IME that is easier to do with scope with 4ish inches of eye relief.

Thanks for the replies.  I've definitely been looking at the Swaro Z3s, but I'm a bit hesitant just because everyone claims the Zeiss Conquest is such an awesome scope and I ended up being somewhat unimpressed with it.  (That's not to say it isn't a great scope for the money.  I'm not knocking the Conquest.  Perhaps I simply had my hopes set too high for something in that price range.)

Regarding the setup for proper eye relief, I've mounted dozens of scopes on rifles and I've never had any problems getting them set up just right.  That's not to say it couldn't happen.  When I get home later, I'll look through it a few more times to see if moving the scope forward in the rings would make any significant difference.

The upside the Swaro is that I wouldn't have to get new Talley rings since it's still a 1" tube and the objective is only 2mm bigger. :)
