Whats your price limit?  Several good ones out there.  SWFA SS 1-4,  Vortex Razor 1-4, ... the list goes on.  Your budget will dictate the best glass you can get into.   Honestly you'll need to spend about double that of the SS to get into better glass though.  Plus there are several SS 1-4's on the samplelist for a steal right now.

I started looking at a Nikon Point Blank, then a Burris MTAC, then a Burris XTR.  Was hoping to spend around $500.  All I know from reading is that I need a 1-4 power, with good glass, and a reticle that I can see at speed.  That is all I know.   I am a rookie at 3 Gun, although am rated as a pistol competitor.

The SS's on the Samplelist are a hair more than budget but you'd be better off than with others.

I think most of the shots will be 100 yards and less , some may go to 200.  i do not know if any will be over 300.  That is why I like having a 1X on the low end.

Is the glass and retical that much better on the SS?  Do you sell or market for SS?

1-4 is plenty
You could run a red dot with a 200 yard zero and hold to top of target at 300 and be fine
MTAC is a nice scope
Fast and has holdover points

I am somewhat shy of red dot scopes.  I use them in open pistol competitions and I am slow to spot the red dot.  I know they are getting popular for rifles, but I think I am more accustom to an optic scope with a cross hair.

When you say you dont like the dots have you tried the Aimpoint brand dots they are the best and quite a bit better than the rest of the ones out there.  This is quite a nice optic I do like the Compact ACOG better but these are quite good.

Wow.  I appreciate the smorgasbord of options.  Lots of different styles and choices.  Lots more money also.  I may have to try some of these fancy holographic scopes to "see" how I "see" with them.  I would hate to buy something and then be trading up within a year, but I do not know if I am ready to jump up from the MTAC yet.

Good luck with it.  I bought one of thse with the amber triangle and like it a lot but I would prefer the red triangle. Note I am sub moa at 300 yds with a 300 yd zero working off the point of the triangle. This one is used but you save a lot of $ still I think you would prefer the red crosshair model.

I have ran about all of the 1-4s out there in comps, the MTAC is the best bang for your buck.

An amazing amount of knowledge on this website.  I thank you all for the input.  (If you guys could do this for marriages, you would make a fortune.)  I like the price of the MTAC but am intrigued by the red triangle scope.  Getting sub moa at 300 yds with a 300 yd zero working off the point of the triangle is impressive.

some people can the triangle reticle some can't
I am in the latter

I can shoot very accurately with the tip but find I just don't like it overall.
at 1x it's too big for 100 yard plates (for me) and the shape just doesn't work for me

Dirty Harry I am having the same issues for an AR

I have it down to the

Leupold VXR Patrol- Simple reticle with enough information for from less than 50 to 300 (my limit on a 223)  or the Zombie with the green vs red dot

Vortex Razor - The PST is hard to make out the subtneds for longer range and the circle is large for CQB  (friend has one on his AR) IT is a little busy but ....

US Optics 1.5 - 6 DFP  best of all worlds but I am going to stop by the factory and look through one before I plunk down that kind of money

If any of you have expierence with any of the above insight is always helpful

Their are people out there with 8.5X22 on thiers and I think they need a reality check.  My bolt action has a 3.5-15 and I can go as far as the 308 can reasonalby take it (1000 yds) if i call the wind right.  And I ant no yoongster any more,  does 3/4 inches at 200 where it is zeroed.  But back to the topic for and AR.  Any insight will be welcomed

Thanks

Here's a couple that may be out of your price range, but they were made for 3-gun, and the 1-6 is getting great reviews.

The Vortex RAZOR with the EBR 556 is on my list

But the reticle is a little wierd

The US optics I have to look through to verify Hoping some had one to let me know  about  it

Fall back is still the VXR leupold  kind of like the Dot for CQB

I will spend what it takes to get the job done right but just want to do it once for this particular AR

Have another AR with an 18 inch barrel using a 2.5-10 nikon monarch X that had laying around (see the doing it once comment)    the scope is overkill but I and using it devleoping handloads for the platform can pick up the 22 holes at 100 for grouping using the spotter for the 200 yard groups and 300 before the SUN wipes out with Mirage on hotter days will whack  a steel pate or two at 400 when I am at the range that has longer ranges.

On that note we are finding the PMC working best in multiple AR's I can't hanload cheaper that what we get it for doing 1.5 inches or less at 100 and holding around 2.5 at 200 so we are burining it up.  The AR I am looking for this application for will do under and inch with the PMC  Handloads I am using the 69 and 75's for the longer barrel.

Meopta ZD 1-4 is another option.
I was hesitant to recommend it as I hadn't got a chNce to use the new one.
Just got it in, true 1x, extremely bright, 2 MOA dot (at 4x) and holdover points for 2, 3, 4 and 500 yards.
Super sharp glass from edge to edge, flat image.

Right now I am down to the Leupold VXR patrol with the Firedot SPR on the low end and the DFP US optics on the high end. Trying to get to the US Optics factory to look throuh a couple before I bite.  Shot an Aimpoint Patrol last week and it was great out to 100 (range linits) saw a lot of junk on the shooting line. I want the 4X option so far but won't go beyond 6X .  I will keep old slab sides (45 1911 for under 25 yards)

wish the SFWA 1x6 was available and may grab one this summer

Will check in when I get something on the rifle and report what the outcome is.

This weekend we got to shoot the Leupold VXR 1.25X4 was impressed with the overall quality and the firedot reticle  sighted in at 50 with a new female shooter she started boring less than 1 inch groups moved her out to 100 groups within limits 1.5 inches of ammo and at 200  we both could pick out a 1 inch dot and she bullseyed it on her new SIG Sauer 516 what a combination.  I am impressed with the whole package.  Mine is on order.  I will still wait for the SFWA 1X6 or the US optics but The leupold works great for my other AR. We are set two inches High at 100 and it works out to two inches low at 200 seems to be the sweet spot.    Ammo is PMC 55 GR and I can't reload for what we are paying for it right now.

You shooting a 5.56? If so, a 200 yard zero makes you <2" high at 100yds and approx 7" low at 300 yards. Top of target aim should work, as mentioned above. In your budget, the Nikon M223 is pretty sweet. I run a Nikon 2x8 M223 on my 16" bull barrel for 3 gun (and fun) and it's more than enough at 300yds but not really too much at 10yds. The Optisan mentioned above is a smokin deal and works really well for the money. I have one mounted on a 16" 5.56 bullpup and it's solid. 4x power should be enough for coyotes at 300-400 yards, too.

Actually we can do this for marriages but we find that the female of the species is immune to male logic.

Geting 2950 FPS AVG out of a 16 inch barrel at 10 ft my ballistic program is running true to the settings for the impacts I am getting and the 55GR bullet  with a 200 zero we are 4 inches high at 100 so we split the difference and for a 200 zero we are projected to be 6 inches low at 300 but havent shot it out at that yet maybe this saturday if the wind is low.  This is a 223 cartridge the 556 will run hotttwer but haven't shot.  THe range will not allow the Green tip 62 grn Nato round

Actually the best marriage advice is to take your wife with you.  The work I stated above was done with My best Freinds wife at the trigger.  Besides women are easier to teach to shoot and she is better that her husband right now.  All of the women I have had the pleasure of introducing to shooting have had a ball.  The Sig Sauer 516 was an early xmas present and she is thrilled. Give them the information and let them at it.  Don't hover all over them and get all into to much help just support.  Believe me they get it quickly.  I tell them what they need to know and why and a few tips after they pull the trigger and it is amazing how fast they get it.  The AR is the perfect platform for the girls for center fire.   Hand them a 22 auto pistol and watch out how fast they are willing to shoot a 44 mag  My budies wife is just 5 ft tall and will not brake 100 on the scale. she now has her own 9mm and AR and wants to try the 12 gauge.  After the range we go to her favorite lunch spot and it is a win win.  For the pistol staple ballons at 15 yards and watch the smile on their faces as they bust em up. For the rifle same at 50 then move the targets out.  All you have to do from there is load magazines (they will ask you for information/tips  from there on).  My daughter started at age 8.  My granddaughter is now ready to start.
