Subject: 10x42 SS on a 700 LTR

I am not completely sold on a fixed power 10x42 for my needs. Will the scope hold zero at sub 75yrds and would the site picture remain clear?

I would like to also use the LTR to hunt whitetails and hogs and not every kill is >100yrds, especially with the piggies. So half of the rig's use will be for 300yrd paper shooting and the other half hunting.

Any input on light transmission of the 4200 Elite 2.5-10x40 Vs the SS with the 30mm tube? Any other variable power 30mm tube scope you would recommend without the bigger 50mm objective? As per the LTR I am trying to keep with small and lighter optics.

How does the 3200 Elite 10x40 compare to the SS?  Is the 3200 limited on yange at the far end without a parallax adjustment?

Secondly, What mounts would you suggest for adequate clearance of The 4200 Elite 2.5-10x40mm and 2.5-10x50mm without excessive optics height over the bore axis on a 700LTR?

I would prefer the Badger Ordinance but I am not made of money. I am looking primarily at the Leupold mounts.  I would prefer a one-piece base and am undecided between having windage adjustability or the sturdy dual dovetail system. The Mark IV also looks interesting.

i love my ss 10x42. mine is clear at 25 yards. as for mounts, if your gonna spend the money for the mark 4 mounts/rings, spend the extra and get the badgers. or atleast buy a leupold 1 peice base, like a prw, or somthing, and get the badger rings. and the mediums is what i would get for it.

I believe you will be happiest with the 4200 Elite, it should be the brightest and clearest of the bunch.

If you dont have the extra money then dont strap yourself to get Badgers or mk4. They are not necessary. I do use Badgers now just for the looks. I have a Rem 700 with an H-S fully adjustable stock, Krieger SS heavy barrel etc, I had been using standard Leupold base and rings for about 4 years and put this gun through hell, and NEVER hand any issues with either scope rings or the mount. I think that when these companies put on the label "Tactical" they double the price. If you have the funds by all means buy the best, if not the standard leupolds will do you just fine.

i think that the leupold PRW rings are just about as good as they get. thats what im getting for my SS. i looked at a set of 1 inch PRW rings and they seem very sturdy. i dont see who would need anything more. i still suggest the SS10x42 though.

The SS10x42 has no problem holding zero at sub 75 yards and will focus as close as 15 yards.  I don't think you would be happy with a fixed 10x on hogs and deer at very close ranges.  It is a very good scope for 300 yard paper punching.  There is no doubt that the 4200 2.5-10x40 is a brighter scope and better suited for hunting.  The SS's 30mm tube does not make it brighter it just allows for more elevation adjustment.  I think a http://www.riflescopes.com/products/LEU56860/leupold_mark_4_pr_3-9x40.htm - Leupold Mark 4 PR 3-9x40 would be an excellent choice for all the things you want to do.  The Elite 3200 10x40 does not come close to the SS in any aspect.  Medium rings will work on a 40mm scope but the 50mm will require high.  We also carry http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/269/mounts/leatherwood.htm - Leatherwood and http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/114/mounts/ior.htm?sb=&so=&page=2 - IOR tactical mounts that have the look and feel of Badger and Mark 4 rings but less money.

If the 30mm tube of the 4200 2.5-10x50mm illuminated does not offer any more brightness (outside of the 50mm objective), that lessons the value compared to the bulk of the scope.

I missed that Leupold Mk4 PR.  That seems really reaonably priced, I wonder why no-one else has recommended it!  It stated the glass is "index matched".  I then assume its the same quality glass as the VX-III???  One of the downers of the 4200 2.5-10x40 was the lack of TT.

Thanks guys!

OK that narrows it down.

Two 4200's and the Leupold MK4/PR to choose from.

Have you looked at the Weaver Tacticals?  They make a 3x9x40 that compares very favorably with the Leupold 3x9x40 PR.

Plus the Weaver utilizes a 1st image plane mil dot reticle that allows you to range accurately on any power.

I have a Leupold Mark 4 and I swear by it, but my good shooting buddy has 2 4200's and
he swears by them. So either would work well.
