I just bought a new Leupold M4 4.5-14x 40 scope and was trying to set it up. I have set up many rifles so I know what I am doing.  This one was driving me NUTS. I couldn't figure out why when I did a level-level-level and looked through the scope the crosshairs were not in axis with the turrets.  I never figured in a million years the scope would be messed up.  I could also look back through the objective at the sky and see very clearly it was off but only by a few millimeters. Maybe someone that doesn't do the type of precision shooting may have missed it but I didn't.

I called Leupold and the guy told me this NEVER happened before which I thought was BS.
Anyone ever hear of anything like this?

Yes, this topic has come up a few times recently. My advise is to send the scope back to Leupold and have it checked.  This is the only way you're going to have piece of mind.

I hear Leupold Customer Service is great.

Good luck, tough break, hope they make it right.

Well I got the scope from competitor and just sent it back to them today.  So they will probably just send me a replacement.  What BS!! I would have never believed a 900$ scope would be jacked up from the factory.  This is something I would expect from a junk Tasco or BSA scope.
If this has in fact come up recently then buyer beware of Leupold! Their QC must be slipping.  If I get another bad one I will hit the factory up for the repairs.
I am just glad I am within the 30 day return period when I noticed the issue.

Gappa, you have a life time warranty with Leupold, so your safe.  Leupold will make it right no matter what.  When I mentioned that this topic has come up before, I should have stated that it has in a broad sense. This is the first issue of this kind I heard of regarding Leupold.

Leupold has a long history of canted reticles. My Vari-X III 8.5-25 x 50 has a canted reticle. Bought it about 10 years ago. I have heard that their acceptable tolerance is pretty broad so they won't "fix" it. Its a know issue with them and has been for years....

Hopefully Leupold will take care of you without problem.  For future reference though, I'd encourage you to test for reticle cant not by comparing it to the exterior knobs, but the actual tracking.  Yes, it is possible for the tracking to not match the exterior orientation of the knobs perfectly (for better or worse).  The tracking is what matters, so that's what you want to test.

I was thinking of buying one, but I guess I will go with US Optics, what do you guys think?  I have a 338 Lapua and I want to reach out, but I only want to buy one scope.  Any suggestions. I am new at long rage so need some help to to it right the first time.

Price and QC are not directly correlated. Bought a $3000 single-shot rifle from Remington's custom shop two years ago. They rebuilt it once and when it wnet back for the same issues again (canted barrel sights) they could not figure ouot how to fix it. After stalling over 6 months I go tired and sent letters to the big gun magazines. In the end they said "the average shooter would never notice..." and refunded the $$$.

HOLY HELL!!!!!!!!!!  I got another scope in today and WOW I can't get over how bad Leupold has gotten!  ANOTHER F'n canted reticle!!  At this point I think I will get my $900 back and buy an IOR. Granted the IOR is twice as much but I hope I get what I pay for.  If OP dosent return all my money I will deff splatter their name all over the internet.

Ive had the same bad luck! 2 vx3 4.5x14x40 both with canted reticals. I figured the first was a fluke. When I opened the second one an hour ago I couldn't believe it. This one will be going back too. Now I'm hesitant to try another.

Just wondering. How did you determine the reticle was canted.

Mount and level the scope you can tell.

Sorry to hear of you bad luck..

On a positive note, I have had at least 1/2 a dozen Leupolds in for testing from the VXRs, VX-6, Mark 4 and Mark 8 in the last year

None have had any problems
As the others said, Leupold will make it right though I can certainly understand your frustration and the thought of "being done with Leupold"

Personally, I wouldn't be looking to IOR as MY experience has been far less than optimum and my buddy has had two fail.  But, others have had good luck, so..

So now it is blurry???

It was BOTH but like I've said a few times already the reticle on the 2nd was SLIGHTLY canted but the optical distortion above 10x was outrageous.
Hey harvey send it back get your money back and go either Zeiss or Schmidt and Bender.. I have already been through the wringer with POS scopes, even Premier which 2 new ones had problems. Granted the glass in the Premiers was FABULOUS but you can search my posts and see the issues I have had.  But I just got my Schmidt and Bender PMII in and it's perfect, everything I ever could want in a scope...except the $$

Now, I am confused.

So was the Leupy blurry? or distorted?

The two are really not the same.
