Hello all.

I'm about to pick up a new .22lr.  It's either going to be a Marlin XT-22 or a Savage MkII G (having trouble deciding.  Just want a good plinking rifle that I can take hunting occasionally.  I expect to mostly shoot about 15-30 yards with this rifle.

Anyway,  after reading the forums and reviews on the www, I had narrowed my scope options down to either the Weaver RV7 or RV9.  Mostly because they sound like the best bang for the buck.  I think that the RV7 will be sufficient but I'm a little concerned about the parallax being set at 50 yards if most of my shooting is going to be close in.  I know the AO on the RV9 is adjustable to 10 yards.  Do you guys think that makes the RV9 a better choice for my close in shots?  Either way, is the RV9 worth the extra $100?

Also, if you guys think that the AO would be worth the extra $$, what do you think about this one?

Is it as good as the RV9?

I know this has been discussed before and I hate to beat a dead horse, but I really value input from you guys.  Some of the members here gave me some really good advice before on the Elite 4200 (I have 3 now) so it only makes sense to come back here for input on my next purchase.

Thanks in advance.

At short range parallax is really only a big deal for super precision shots like fine target shooting and really only a noticeable problem at high magnification. I'm too lazy to look up the formula and do the math right now to calculate the potential worst case parallax error but plus or minus 1/8" is probably a safe guess for those distances. That's enough to seriously frustrate a match shooter but unlikely to be a factor when shooting squirrels at 20-30 yards. On the other hand stopping to dial in an adjustable objective may slow you enough to miss the shot. I can't say for sure why the RV7 doesn't have AO and the RV9 does, but my SWAG is that it's because of the general rule of thumb for a hunting scope is that parallax isn't a big deal at 7x and below at rimfire ranges, and 10x and below at centerfire ranges. I'll let you decide for yourself whether or not you need AO. As for scope ranking I rely on http://www.chuckhawks.com/recommended_riflescopes.htm - this one which puts the Prostaff line about a 1/2 step below the Weaver Classic Rimfire scopes.

As for Weavers all I can say is that I've voted with my wallet and own two Classic K4 scopes, an RV9, two V24 on custom 10/22s, and a T24 on my Anschutz. My next will probably be an RV7 (or Sightron S1) for a putting food on the table .22cal survival rifle project I'm planning for next year.

An RV9 on a custom Ruger 10/22 with an ER Shaw fluted match barrel.

A V24 on a (after a lot of work) sub-MOA 10/22 with a Volquartsen THM barrel.

A Weaver T-24 target scope (w/sunshade) on my Anschutz 64 MPR.

I have both scopes mounted on .22 hunting rifles.  Although the 9 is very nice, and the AO is a good feature, I like the 7 best for hunting.

I like the Weaver 2-7x as well. Here it is on my CZ 452.

Question, what's the minimum distance for that RV7 to be in focus?

Cheaptrick, can I get side shots of this rifle and scope " I like the Weaver 2-7x as well. Here it is on my CZ 452."  I'm looking at the Weatherby, Browning and CZ .22 bolts myself and would like to see how your rifle looks outfitted.  What kind of groups are you getting out of it and what distances are you shooting?  Thanks, bird_hunter66 another NC guy here.

Sholling:
At 2.5x, I'm guessing I can get it to focus down to 20-25 yards.

BH:
You bet!
Shooting out to 50 yards and accuracy is almost boring. This little .22LR will "stack 'em" with plain ol Remington green box ammo. Nice little detachable, 5 round magazine.

I liked it so well, I just traded a dude a G17, for a NIB CZ 452 Trainer in .17 HMR Monday. Big Grin
Shoots well with iron sites too.

These are Warne low rings.

Check that!

Took it out again and looked. I'd say on 2.5x, you can focus down CLEARLY to around 10 yards, plus or minus.

I rarely agree with Mr. Trick...but he's right this time.
The Weaver 2-7x is a GREAT buy.

Thank you, Cheaptrick and Sholling! Your recommendations were very helpful in my decision to go with the RV7 over other more expensive and powerful models. Build quality and optics are excellent and I feel that I've made a very wise investment for my first scope.
