Hi guys I need to know if the Leupold VX-3 40mm objective might be a tad smaller than the Bushnell Elite 4200 40mm? I have a 4200 on my Sako Finnlight with Medium rings. I want to keep the same rings and upgrade to a Leupold VX-3; but right now, the Elite has paper thin clearance on the gun. So I want to make sure the Leupold will fit. It seems like the Leupold's 40mm may be smaller than Elite 40mm. But I though someone on this forum might be able to tell me with certainty. Thanks for any help. I appreciate anybody who can share their knowledge.......... Ryan

Might give SWFA a call if you bought it from them, they can probably put a caliper on both and tell you the exact diameter on the outside.

Leupold lists an outside diameter of the objective bell of the 3.5-10X40 VX3 as 1.8" at the front end.
My 40mm 4200 measures at ~ 1.87".
Both have about the same length of objective bell plus flare from tube to bell.
Since the Leupold has longer eye relief and would subsequently be mounted forward of your Bushnell a bit and has a smaller obj. diameter, you should be just fine.

The critical clearance is actually at the rear of the objective bell, where it would contact the barrel taper. The only fly in the ointment would be if the Leupold has a long bell and short flare, rather than the Bushnell's short obj. and long flare- that would locate the rear of the Leupold obj. bell closer to the rear of the scope... not to worry, the ~ .3" longer eye relief and smaller diameter would likely overcome any problems in re length of obj. bell.

Here's a pic showing the difference between long bell w/short flare and the 4200's short bell/long flare... and the relationship to contact with barrel at rear of bell.

is a VX3 an "upgrade" over a 4200 elite?

I really like the 4200 Elites; I have one on each of my 25-06 rifles. I have been Pro-Bushnell Elite for 9 years. But I bought my first Leupold VX-3 the other day and I like it a lot. To tell you the truth; I don't know that it is any better than an Elite 4200; but it may be just as good.  I think they are real close to each other in quality; but I love the Alumina Flip back covers and other accessories you can get for Leupold Scopes. I may not be so quick to jump into removing that 4200 from the Sako. I hit a coyote at 327 yards with that Sako/4200 set-up; in New Mexico in 2004; off shooting sticks. It really seems to me that Leupold is making a heck of scope with the VX-3. I would be upgrading in magnification; going from 2.5-10x40 to 4.5-14x40.

But Thanks for the valuable info.

I have never owned an elite but, I have two Leupold VX-3 4.5x14 CDS's and could not be happier.
Flip back covers are one of the reasons I bought a Leupold to begin with.

That makes sense.  Good luck and don't forget a picture when you get it set-up!
