I see a lot of expensive rifle scopes with small lens size such as 1.5-5 x 20mm.

Or perhaps 25mm.

I always thought that the larger scope lenses like 32, 40 or 50 mm were preferred.

Can anyone explain why these smaller scopes might be better?

Thanks, that was a pretty interesting discussion even if it did not settle on just one answer.

But having said all of that I'm still thinking that a larger lens will transmit more light all other things being equal.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but that has always been my understanding.
