I have a Romainian AK 47 semi 7.62x39 rifle that has a scope base on the left side of the reciever. I have seen some cheap aluminum bases that screw tighten to convert to a weaver base. I have seen the Utilimac gas tube conversion for a scout weaver type base  and I have seen some russian optics that looked like crap. So who has a system that they are really happy with.  I am thinking about using an EOTech or AimPoint on the Utilimac scout type mount but would consider a scope or mount that attaches where the original base is.

What works for you?

There are good quality side mounts there.  IOR makes one among others.  There are two types of side plates: SVD and AK.  Make sure you get the right one.

There are a few websites out there that sell the Russian made ones also and some are quite good.  Stay away from Kalinka optics.  These guys seem to know there stuff: http://www.tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bst.html - http://www.tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bst.html

Of russian sights, I think PK-AS is quite good and is something to consider.

As I said, there are quite a few well made Russian ones.  If you are intent on getting an IOR (it is a bit pricey), I am sure Chris can order them for you.
