Hello all,

My name is Tim, I am new to the forum. I am interested in the crosshair thickness of the SS 3-9x42 Tactical scope. I have been told that the reticle is thicker than that of the 10x or the 5-20x. The crosshair thickness on the 10x and the 5-20x is .05 mil or .18" at 100 yards. How much thicker are the cross-hairs on the 3-9x? May I have the dimensions/subtensions of the 3-9x42 Mil Quad reticle? By the way, this is the reticle with the closed diamonds. Thank you for your assistance. The scope is going to be an all purpose scope; I am also going to use it for F/TR at 600 yards, which is why I want to know how thick it is.

Good question - mine just got ordered. I have two of the mil dot version but will have the 3-9 Mil Quad shortly. I do have two of the  5-20 and like them real well. If you are working primarily at 600 I would probably go with the 10x HD version due to the parallax adjustment it has. I have had one of the  10HD in a mil dot side by side with the 3-9  and if you dont need those lower powers for close in work under 100 yds or shooting off hand I would definately go with the 10x HD.

Thank you for the reply and advice. I considered the 10x, but as I mentioned this will be an all purpose scope. I may hunt with it as well as general range use from 100 to 600 yards. The 600 yard use will entail  F/TR; I realize there are better options than 3-9, but I need the scope to do multiple things. When I can afford it, I may consider dedicated equipment; but for now, rifles and scopes will have to be multi-purpose.

The cross-hairs are not thicker. The outer posts are heavier. The only difference in the actual reticle is the diamonds are filled in.

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Actually guys, the center lines are a tad thicker at .07 Mil.  They don't look too thick since the magnification is only 3-9X; they fit it well.  If you could crank it up to 20X people would likely complain that they're too thick.

Jon A,

Thanks for the clarification. At .07 mil, it will be .252" at 100 yards. At 600 yards, it will cover 1.51". This should be fine enough.
