Didn't do the trig on it, but just thinking logically, I'd say E.

7 squared plus unknown = 25 squared

unknown = 24
24 - 4 = 20
20 squared + uknown squared = 25 squared

unknown = 15
15-7 = 8

E

I did the math. It is E.

A squared plus B squared equals C squared.
7 squared plus B squared = 25 squared.
49 + B squared = 625
B squared = 576
B = 24

Then

A squared + 20 squared = 25 squared
A squared + 400 = 625
A squared = 225
A = 15

Then

15 - 7 = 8

I did the same thing basically as SVT and tried to keep it challenging by doing it in my head. The square root of 576 I had to think on for a moment or two...glad it was a whole number!

Intuitively, you'd think a triangle with a hypotenuse of 25 and a base of 7 would have a shorter opposite side. Now, can everybody sing "On top of Catheti"?

A rope ladder on a boat hangs over the side of the boat and just reaches the water. Its rungs are 8 inches apart.

How many rungs will be under the water when the tide rises 4 feet?

None. The boat floats up and remains the same height on the water.

E.  is the correct answer...

This one will require a bit more thought...  It's not hard, it's just not obvious...

Going to start you off on a savings plan.

Picture a 31 day calendar month.  On day 1, I'll give you 1 cent.  All I want you to do is double the amount each day until the end of the month.  You may want a calculator or Excel to help you, but it's more fun guessing first how much you think you'll have at the end.

Three guys go hunting, as it is starting to get dark they stumble upon a hunting lodge.  Amongst themselves they agree to see about getting a room for the night.  Upon entering the establishment they ask the hostess what a room for the night will cost them.  She replies, "30 Dollars".  The guys agree and each decided to pay 1/3 of the costs, or 10 dollars each.   A few minutes later the hostess realizes she made a mistake, and they are having a special and rooms are only 25 dollars a night.  She calls over the bag boy and hands him 5 dollars in one dollar bills, asking him to go give it to the guys that just checked in.  On the way to their room the bag boy thinks to himself.  There are only 3 of them, and I have 5.  He decides to keep two for himself as a tip, and give each of them a dollar back.

So after the one dollar refund the three guys each paid $9.

9x3 = 27

If the bag boy kept 2

27+2 = 29.

If they originally paid $30, where did the other dollar go?

Posted By: jonoMT
Date Posted: December/10/2011 at 16:51
If they had originally been charged $25, each would have paid $8.33 (one would have had to kick in an extra penny). They were each given a dollar but should have got a $1.67.

.67 x 3 = ~ $2.00.

It didn't really "go" anywhere...just depends on how you account for it! If the lodge had just refunded all their money (except for what the bag boy stole), they would have gotten $28 ($9.33 each).

That is a funny one, Thundey, but it is just an illusion. They only paid $27 all together. That is $25 for the bill and $2 for the tip. They didn't pay $27 for the room.

Tricky, tricky.

I'm thinking E(4) too... The line crosses the Y-axis 4 times. It's gotta go through .2 4 times somewheres along each curve.

Yes, I can see that...

However, it does not depend upon crossing the x-axis.  Given the "proper" values, it could cross the x-axis a number of times and never reach .2 within the range.  But it does, so 4 IS the correct answer.

I should have been more clear in my response: The line crosses the x-axis 4 times and clearly has values that exceed .2 so it stands to reason that it must pass through .2 4 times.

Sure. I thought it meant a straight line...as in a line segment, which is what we programmers are used to defining as a line. Going back and reading it, I'll say E is the answer because the shape of the curve is not parabolic.

If the function were a line, the slopes of the segments (0,-9),(1, -4) and (1, -4), (3,0) would be the same.  However, the slope of  (0,-9),(1, -4) is 5, and the slope of (1, -4), (3,0) is 2.  The graph of f cannot be a line.

However, if the function (undefined in the problem) was, say, y=(x-3)^2, ((x-3) squared), the graph would contain the points (0,-9),(1, -4), (3,0), a parabola symmetric to y=3.
Max value of f is at (3,0) and y<=0 for all points x, y in f.
