Greetings:

My first post to the board is listed below so folks can have an idea of where
I am in my processes: http://www.opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=3046&PN=1 - http://www.opticstalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=3046&PN=1
Here in the "real" riflescopes area, I wanted to find out what folks would
recommend for the following rifle scenarios:

1)Marlin 1894c 18.5 inch barrel (microgroove 12) Level-action chambered .357
I'd really like to put a scope on it and use it as a hog/deer brush rifle, but I
think I also need to learn how to shoot with iron sites.  I see SWFA has some for
sale by XS, does anyone have any experience using them?
(prices from swfa_mounts_2004rev.pdf  page 19)
Marlin 1894/336 Ghost Ring set $89.95 product key ML00125
Scout Mount for Marlin 1894 $49.95 product key 282169C0923
I realize a scout sope is going to have a longer eye relief since its mounted
"forward" on the gun, are they harder/easier to use?  Are they worth it versus
getting some other mount system that would allow a standard scope?  Am I nuts
for thinking of putting a scope on this rifle at all?

2) .35 Winchester lever-action.  Obviously this one packs a much larger
foot-pound payload, so would it be for big buck hunting?

(again, data from winchester's website, search X35R1)

3) Grandpa's old 30-40 Krag Level Action with a ring peep site.  Of the three
rifles I have acces to, this one packs the biggest wallop.  Here in Texas, do I
even need to consider using it?  Wouldn't the .35 be sufficient for any deer or
hog here?

I think it would be a waste to put a scope on anything chambered in .357magnum.  .35 Remington will kill any deer in TX.  Range will be limited with the .35.

XS makes a nice site.  I am TRYING (gunsmith keeps missing his own deadlines) to get Wild West sights put on mine.  If you use XS(ashely) you will need a new front sight.  I have Ghostrings on my 870 and a 1911.

The 30-40 is a collectors item.  The .35 Remington would work well with a basic 4x scope.

A rifle 357 has about the same muzzle energy as a 44 mag handgun. A scout scope on one makes a handy pickup gun. Very fast within 100 yards. Hornadys new pointed hunting bullets allows you to use a much higher ballistic coefficient in the .35 than in the past without risking column detonation. Even at that the gun would be rainbow at 300 yds. All three guns are very high on the fun factor. Personally I would go with the old Krag just for giggles.

With regard to putting a sight on your "brush gun" I would suggest you consider mounting a red dot from Bushnell, Burris or Aimpoint.  I have a Bushnell Trophy red dot mounted atop a Marlin 336 in 30/30.  This is my "brush gun" for whitetail & boar and I have been very pleased with the setup's performance & ease of use.  The sight allows you to shoot with both eyes open (take a little practice but greatly improves the speed & accuracy of your shooting) and is very light & small (very good for carrying in the woods; you also won't have problems with the scope hanging up on limbs, etc.).  The Bushnell is also very rugged & I have yet to experience with a shift in point of impact caused by the optic getting banged around in the woods.  Finally, this setup is affordable as the scope & dovetail base totaled out only set me back about $130.

Thanks ranburr, silver,Dale Clifford, and ceylonc for the continued suggestions.

I think I am going to leave grandpa's 30-40 alone.  It is set up the way he used it,

and I know it served him well.  No point in messing with it when the .35 should be

big enough for anything down here anyways.  Since the .357 is light and cheap, I'm

still going to give it a shot as the brush gun since my hunting situations have been

under 100 yards all three times I have been out (Yep, I'm still a tenderfoot)

I can't imagine firing at anything longer than a football field away anyways.  Maybe

in a couple years with alot more practice, but my public range is 100 yards max

as well.

I looked over the Aimpoint product line, and its too expensive for what I am trying

to accomplish.  I think I would be better off buying another caliber rifle instead of

one of their sites to mount on the carbine.  (Yes I do plan on eventually buying

my own rifle(s), but I need a freezer full of meat 1st before the wife would even

consider it)

I also looked over the BSA line as mentioned above:

http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/664/rifle_scopes/bsa_riflescopes/bsa_red_dot_30mm_scopes.htm - http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/664/rifle_scopes/bsa_ riflescopes/bsa_red_dot_30mm_scopes.htm

Most of these look to not be hardy enough to use , Im afraid the panaramic window

would get too dirty too quick.  Does anyone have any experience with them?

This one's price is hard to argue with if it work well, and I like the field of vision the

42 mm provides.

$46.95

On the Burris side of things, whats the real difference between these two sites

besides 11 dollars and camo?

I will continue to peruse opticstalk and hopefully by President's Day I will be able

to swing over to Red Oak and purchase some kind of "visual assistance"

I shot a deer in Texas with a 4inch barrel S&W .357 mag at 75 yds and he went down like a rock. So you are not entirely nuts. Would it be my first choice for rifles no I would use a .308 or 30-06 but for a brush gun the .357 will kill a deer. I have one of these Burris 1X scopes on an Encore 45-70 pistol and it works fine for a brush gun. Very fast - eye relief is not an issue.
