I would like some suggestions and opinions from other members.
I have been reading the forum for a couple of years, but this is my first post.

I would like an IOR 1.5-8x26 with side rheostat and ADM AD-RECON mount.
I am still several months from saving the cash to purchase what I would like.

I am temped to purchase a Hawke 1.25-4.5x24 and a Burris AR-P.E.P.R. QD
now and start saving up again for the better IOR/ADM solution.

The only use for either option will be on top of a 16" 5.56/6.8 AR which would
be used for target/hunting/home defense.

Is there a better option for less or a little more than the Hawke or should I
learn to be content with my iron sights and Docter until I can afford the IOR?

Good glass, illumination, large tube, side mounted rheostat, compact, weight are my
main considerations. I am not opposed to a 4x, 6x or 8x without variable magnification.

Thanks in advance.

How about the SS 1-4x.

http://www.opticstalk.com/extensive-swfass-group-buy-incredible-savings_topic28845.html - http://www.opticstalk.com/extensive-swfass-group-buy-incredible-savings_topic28845.html   I have 2 of them and really like them.  IMO one of the very best scopes you can buy for an AR type rifle.

I have no doubt the SS is a better scope, but $800 is a long way from $420.

The SS will be good enough you don't have to worry with the IOR.

But that includes a $200 mount and other stuff.

FFP, cattail, flip caps, better mount, exposed turrets and backed by SWFA are all +'s.
I will strongly consider it.

My recommendation would be to hold out for what you really want, rather than buy a stop-gap optic that doesn't do what you want.

The 1-4X is a goo solution for what you have stated.

I would recommend against a fixed 6X or 8X for hunting a .223 (maybe not for a 6.8.)

For your gun and your budget, I'd look at a red dot.  It can do everything you want done.

For home defense, a 6X would be bad.

I have an IOR 1.5-8x26 on the way, but since I don't have it yet, I can't comment. Another option is the Vortex 1-4x24, http://swfa.com/Vortex-1http://swfa.com/Vortex-1-4x24-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44570.aspx-4x24-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44569.aspx - http://swfa.com/Vortex-1http://swfa.com/Vortex-1-4x24-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44570.aspx-4x24-Viper-PST-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P44569.aspx

They come either Mil/Mil or MOA/MOA, and the reticle is SFP. This might suit you till you have the coin for the IOR.
The SS 1-4 is a great choice as well, but my eyes have trouble with FFP scopes (I'm one of a few) so I like SFP scopes in the lower powers, and FFP scopes in the higher powers.

I currently have a Docter 7MOA red dot I purchased from SWFA on top.

Good info.

In that case: save money, hold out for a 1-4X or the IOR you want.

Didn't the cheapie 1-4 Optisan fare well with some as a starter to hold off and save till the SS 1-4????

Other than the SS 1-4 I also advise holding out for a scope that you are going to be reasonably sure will last you a long time and fit your needs. If you're a buyer (another suggestion is to keep checking SWFA's samplelist.com site or the classifieds here or on Snipers Hide), used optics can be a good deal. If you sell, you will usually find you get 50-75% of what you paid. It's up to you to decide if "renting" a stop-gap scope will be worth it.

X's 2 on this. Excellent
The Bobro precision mount alone is a $209.95 value.
And is the best mount I have seen.
If you take it off to switch to something else and then put it back on, it repeats within 1/2 MOA. Yippee

I also agree with Jeff, your FOV will be more narrow on fixed that on varible and would not be ideal for home protection. Granted a CQB situation in most cases is point and shoot to eliminate the threat. But for fast aquisition would not be optimal.

The only thing that I personally do not like about IOR was how heavy they are.
But the glass quality is nice and they are very robust.

With your Docter sight one thing you could do is use the GG&G mount on the scope like this.

Or you could use the Burris PEPR mount with the picatinny tops with the Fast Fire mount
Your Docter will sit on there nicely.

Graham,
How do you like your Optisan?

If history has taught me anything - and it certainly has ... is that you should never compromise on kit.

To that end, I'd strongly recommend you chase down that IOR you want or the increasingly popular option - the SS 1-4 HD.

Good luck to ya.
